ITU Approves Universal Phone Charger

Published

Although word is these will start shipping with phones in 2010, I’m not sure how quickly the momentum carry things. That said, I’d love to see this happen. The International Telecommunications Body (ITU) has approved a universal charger that is supposedly more energy efficient and will work with any phone. The ITU is a United Nations entity. The new charger will use a micro-USB connector.

The reason I’m not sure how quickly or widely this will roll out, is that, although approved by the ITU, compliance is non-compulsory. Some handset makers have signed on, so I’m guessing the market will have a say in how well this intiative works.
