Students Create iPhone Orchestra

7dec09iubv321I find this cool. Students at the University of Michigan have created a Mobile Phone ensemble, learning to both program and play music on their iPhones/iPod Touches. Under the direction of Georg Essel the students code their own stuff using the SDK and accessing the sensors available, along with several other apps and tools.

I know several musicians who use apps on the iPhone for their work, but they haven’t created any music yet that I know of, but I imagine it is only a matter of time. We’ve go a show coming up next season in which this might be an experiment worth trying.

In any regard Wired has the low down on this and there is more video of this here and some after the jump. A concert is scheduled for Dec 9, so if anyone heads out to see it, report in on your thoughts.
UPDATE: Looks like Stanford’s music department is getting into the swing of things as well. Videos and more at Mashable.
