Apple Tablet Rumors Continue. JooJoo Allows for Higher Price for the Myth

Published

apple_tabletYes, we’ve got more Apple Tablet rumors floating about, begun by yet another analyst. This time the rumor says Apple will be gearing up production on a 10 inch device (old news) in February for delivery in March or April. It also says Apple has been talking to publishers (again, old news) about delivering content on the device in a move against Amazon.

Yawn. I still think the last round of rumors that put any possible Apple Tablet off until later in 2010 are probably more accurate. I also think that the recent Crunchpad/JooJoo ruckus probably left Apple smiling and counting potentially higher profits. Given that the JooJoo is now targeted at $500, this gives room for Apple to up their entry price for the Tablet. Many were predicting (hoping) for a price range of $700 to $800. I’m guessing the Cupertino bean counters are now thinking $999 is the sweet spot thanks to the JooJoo. I mean if a web only device is costs $500, what would a device with more capability be worth, especially when you are a high end retailer?

“I mean if a web only device is costs $500, what would a device with more capability be worth, especially when you are a high end retailer?”

Clarification: that is what one company is trying to sell it for, not what it is worth. Let’s say it falls flat. Clearance price is $249. Or, let’s say they try to sell it at $399 after a month. That means that a $999 iTab would be 2.5 times more expensive. Apple always gets a premium, but that’s pretty high.

Also, consider the Dell Vostro V13 – at .65 inches and $450. It is not a tablet, but that may be a cross-shopped comparison. Heck, if Dell flipped the screen, you’d have a .65 inch Win 7 tablet for $600 (the cost of the Dell with Win7).

Anyways, I think hitting $1000 on the iTab may be a little high.

    D.

This article is nonsense. The JooJoo is a failure, no features, poor hardware and a high price. It’s not even worth $300.
The AppleTablet can’t be more expensive than the iPhone without contract.
I really can’t imagine how Apple will sell this device, if it really exists.

Of course this might all change if the Courier enters the market at <$600.

Why is it so hard to believe the mythic Apple tablet could cost $1000?

Mac: Their cheapest Mac costs $600 with no monitor, no peripherals, and no battery. Their cheapest Macbook costs $1000 without a capacitive touchscreen and relying on the keyboard for ventilation.

iPod: assuming the same screen ratio, a 10″ screen would put an Apple tablet at around nine times the size of an iPod touch. Size increase alone at least triples the price (bigger battery, pricier touchscreen), not counting any useful add-ons, like ports.

Unless Apple is going to introduce a tablet as their cheapest product ever, $1000 seems right in their price range.
