T-Mobile is doing something for its customers who just cant wait to get their hands on the latest and greatest smartphones, even when they already have one. I know I love my G1, but that doesnt mean I wouldnt want the Nexus One or even the myTouch 3G.
T-Mobile is offering post-paid smartphone customers on a two year contract or feature phone customers looking to upgrade to a smartphone, two tiers of upgrade pricing…as long as you renew for two more years. The idea is to make upgrading to the latest and greatest smartphone as painless as possible. And, for those who always want the latest and greatest smartphone, it wont be as costly.
Tier 1 pricing is for customers who have had their phone for 1-11 months, are currently in a two year contract, and have a individual voice plan that is $29.99 or higher, $49.99 for family plans, and are upgrading to a smartphone.
Tier 2 pricing is for customers who have had their phone for 12-21 months, are currently in a two year contract, and have a individual voice plan that is $29.99 or higher, $49.99 for family plans, and are upgrading to, or buying a new smartphone.
We havent gotten the complete run down on what kind of discounts they are offering, but the speculation is that, for example, the T-Mobile myTouch 3G, which goes for $400, would cost around $240 with tier 2 pricing.
It will be interesting to see the real upgrade costs when this is fully implemented. I know that as a T-Mobile customer, its always been expensive to upgrade my smartphones, unless I buy one off of eBay or a friend. The last time I looked at upgrading from my then Blackberry 8900 to a myTouch 3g, it was going to cost me $400. Instead, I lucked out and got my G1 from a friend who didnt want it anymore. A huge cost saving for me. Will this new tier model work? I dont know. I just dont know.
