Gizmodo Reveals the Tale of the How the Iphone Became Lost

This has to be one of the strangest, perhaps saddest, and even yet perhaps accidentally farcical stories I’ve read in some time. Gizmodo is revealing the supposed details of how it got its hands the now infamous next iPhone.

According to the story it was indeed lost in a bar back in March. Lots of beer drinking was involved, as apparently was a Random Drunk Guy. From there it made its way to Gizmodo, who has contacted the engineer, claiming that they would like to return the phone. (This of course is after the opened it up and videoed the innards.) You have to feel for the Apple engineer who left the phone behind, unless you’re one of those who still believe this is one of Apple’s Machiavellian plots to control the tech news cycle. Certainly there is some interesting timing surrounding the story, with Gizmodo breaking its story on the day that the Verizon Incredible came due. And we all know that Apple isn’t beyond manipulating things to its advantage. Of course Apple isn’t talking. Yet. They’ve been known to go into a full tilt legal boogie over things much less than this, but hten if they follow through on trying to retrieve what they reportedly say is stolen property, they implicitly what we might already know.

Perhaps we’ll never know the real scoop. Perhaps we will, if this is indeed the phone that debuts when Apple chooses to let it. Perhaps Gizmodo (and Engadget) were played. Perhaps this was just another saga that proves humans can make mistakes and things can get out of control no matter how much control you try to exert over the circumstances.

The only real thing we know is that, regardless of the serious implications for some in this story, it is one hell of a story and even though it is still playing out, it is already legend.

UPDATE: And now Apple has asked for the device back and Gizmodo has said it will return same.
