The Great iPhone 4.0 Detective Hunt

Published

on

It has been a crazy weekend for those following rumors about the next iPhone that many assume will drop this summer. Word began to spread when Engadget ran some pictures of a device that was found in a restaurant in Redwood City. Apparently the individual with the pictures wanted some cash for folks to look closer.

Most folks screamed fake, Engadget stuck to its guns, and then John Gruber sort of validated Engadget’s claims. Now Gizmodo claims to have the device in question and is starting a series of posts on what it has discovered. I’m guessing Gizmodo paid the bounty to get their hands on the device.

Of course it isn’t working, Gizmodo claims Apple remote wiped it, but they’ve done a tear down and are delving out their findings about components, size, weight, features, etc…

Apparently Apple wants the device back, and I’m sure the legal beagles will be getting involved at some point. Not to mention the fate of the poor individual who might have left this behind is probably a nasty one.

Totally agree that it was staged. What I can’t get over if this is in fact the design of the next-gen iPhone is how ugly it is (I think…maybe it would grow on me once I saw it powered on running 4.0). The front and aluminum sides look good, but would Apple really abandon the sloped/curved back of the 3G/3GS? On the other hand, I guess it would make it easier to hold. It would be an interesting design choice though…

I think I take back my comment on it being ugly after seeing it side by side on Gizmodo’s site on Chen’s latest report: https://gizmodo.com/5520160/gal-2//gallery/1 I’ve come full circle and think it looks really good. Still not 100% convinced. If it’s real, the casemakers are going to love this since nothing will fit anymore…

I’m personally of the opinion that the body design is not indicative of the final design. At the very least I would imagine the buttons changing to look more….Apple-y.

But really, I think that it’s a test device for easier access. Big seams and obvious screws lend themselves for quicker opening than the current design, so the hardware engineers can get in and tinker easier. While the overall shape may indeed change, I forsee some more conformity to the typical unibody style being implemented before release.
