Google Offers Up Preview of Chrome Web Store

Published

on

Google’s I/O Conference was sure to bring news and it did on a number of fronts. One of those was a curious preview of what Google is calling the Chrome Web Store. It’s a curious announcement in some respects because the apps Google is talking about offering are web apps. Apparently the Chrome Web Store will be a feature of both the Chrome browser and the Chrome OS. When asked if it would be available for other browsers, Google gave a PR answer saying that they desire everything to be open, which means no answer yet.

In talking about the announcement several execs talked about the big question that it offers, saying that the move to pure web apps is still a ways off, but according to Sergey Brin, not too far off. The key to this is HTML5, and there’s acknowledgment that we aren’t quite there yet with that web based platform.

Intriguingly one of the apps shown off was the game Plants vs. Zombies running as a FLASH app, so it looks like Adobe has gained an ally in its war with Apple over FLASH. But, then again, this is all still very early and we’ll have to play wait and see.

This Chrome app store seems like an extensions store???? Or are they allowing some way to actually install software–they state apps based on web technology. . . extensions right?
There's already a Chrome extension site?!?!?
