Bloomberg: New Kindle in August

Published

on

We already know that whatever Amazon comes out with next for its Kindle that it won’t have a color screen. Bloomberg is reporting that when it quotes a couple of unidentified sources that whatever the new Kindle will be we’ll see it debut this August. According to Bloomberg, the new Kindle will be thinner and have a more responsive screen that also offers more detail. While this all may or may not be true, the timing makes sense as Amazon’s big sales push time is the holiday season.

I know quite a few of folks have ditched their Kindles in favor of iPads, and I certainly enjoy the reading experience on the iPad. That said, the Kindle is still my favorite bed time reader due to its lighter weight. But I doubt I would be buying another one in the future.

It will need a whole host of compelling features geared toward making my reading, and research experience more enjoyable. Put the Sd card back. Samsungs reader has caught my eye with it’s wacom pen input. Writing notes in a journal and in the margins of my book would be much desired features. Support ePub. I love kindle 1, but amazon isn’t Apple, they are going to have to be a little more open to stay competitive with the other e-readers.

I have a iPad alo, but e-ink just can’t be beat for reading. It will just depend on who gives me all the features I need. I’m loyal to Kindle and have waited all this time to see what their next reader would be before I jump ship. I guess August will finally decide that for me.

This is getting to be a zero-sum game. With B&N putting the Nook software on the iPad, you can read books from almost any source, so why stay with a single source, limited use, device? Yes, the iPad is larger and heavier (can’t believe I’m saying that as a guy who grew up with a 6 pound notebook as the holy grail of notebooks), but only around the margins. The iPad already does so much more, and with a few more tweaks (and folding bluetooth keyboard) will easily replace a notebook for all weekend/holiday junkets.

I love the pen on paper effect of my HP 2730p, but having so much in a tablet the size of my HP 2730p SCREEN is just too enticing. Just think how much we sacrificed in the early age of ultralight notebooks (think of the Protege compromises) and I can easily live with the iPad compromises for size, weight, and feature set.
