No Surprise: Amazon Announces New Kindle $139 WiFi Only $189 3G

Please tell me you saw this coming. Amazon is announcing its next generation Kindle. It’s not the Kindle 3, it’s just called the Kindle. There are two radio options and price points. A $139 WiFi only model and a $189 3G model that will use AT&T. This will be rolling out on August 27th. Amazon says the E Ink screen has a faster refresh, and of course it is still not in color, but it is still 6 inches in size. You can also have a choice of colors the now familiar white or a darker Graphite, similar to the Kindle DX. Internal storage has been increased to 4GB and Amazon is saying battery life will be around a month with wireless switched off and 10 days with it switched on. The form factor is also smaller and lighter.

Engadget got to go hands on and is reporting that there are some design changes with the rocker and the side buttons. They also think the build quality feel more polished. There’s also a jacket accessory that has a small pull out light. You can find more pictures and video here.

Amazon will begin taking orders tomorrow.

Of course the question everyone will be asking is, will it compete? I still think yes. You?

I definitely think it’ll compete. I love the kindle and it’s battery life is superb. My first recommendation to anyone on the look out for an e-reader is the kindle.

My mom always tells me how much she likes her Kindle, especially now that it takes PDF’s. She actually prints her sermons off to PDF and then puts them on the Kindle now for church service so that she’s not losing paper notes and doesn’t have to carry around notebooks as much. Pretty shocking for a former reporter, lol.

So you can side-load pdf directly now and not have to go through amazon to get it on the reader?
Does it do e-pub as well?

I think $99 is going to be the real sweet spot price for these.
I wonder if the holidays will bring anything along those lines.
With so much up-in-the-air in the tablet space this year, any predictions seem like a total crap shoot.

Screen is still optimized to reading – including the glass.
    Free 3G.
    Battery life without recharging.
I guess that its still better than any 7″ tablet coming soon – targeted at reading.

Amazon quickly reacts on any move from Nook. After dropping the price to 149$, Amazon released redesigned Kindle with 139$ for Wi-Fi version (the keyboard, I believe, is much more comfortable than it was before). And now, Kindle is the leader at ebook market.

So, it is Nooks turn to answer with new proposition to us…
