Got The Glif, Love this iPhone 4 Tripod Adapter/Kickstand

Tom and Dan, makers of The Glif mailed over a prototype Glif as a thank you for backing their project. The 3D printed prototype might not be as polished as the final project, but I’m loving it already.

I’ve been using my iPhone 4 as my point and shoot camera since I got it. I’ve been pretty happy with the results, but camera shake is still an issue, especially when using it to shoot video clips. The Glif is a very simple contraption that grips the edge of the iPhone 4 securely and has threads for a standard tripod mount.

There are other solutions to stabalize the iPhone 4, such as the Gorillamobile for iPhone 4, but I wanted more flexibility. The Glif allows me to mount my iPhone 4 on my monopods, tripods and my standard Gorillapod. It provides a grip that’s strong enough to hold the iPhone 4 in place while upside down. I wouldn’t want to shake it too much, but it’s pretty solid for normal use.

I didn’t even realize that the Glif had a secondary function beyond acting as a tripod mount until I started playing with it. Next to the threads is a slot that allows the Glif to grip onto the edge of the iPhone 4. This allows the Glif to act as a kickstand, perfect for use while my iPhone 4′s on my desk.

Amazingly, Tom and Dan wrote thank you cards to each of their backers as they packed these up. They’ve put in some serious labor to get these things produced and mailed out. I look forward to seeing the final version of the Glif in the coming weeks.

I like the Glif and all, but the company i work for (PC Treasures) makes a competing product that I think is better. It will connect any smartphone to your tripod and, unlike with the Glif, you don’t have to remove your phone from its case. Also, it’s ten bucks cheaper. If you’re interested you can find it at http://www.digitaltreasures.com/camera_acc_details.php?recordID=07471
