Sharp Rumored to Build LCD Screens for iPhone 7?

Published

After rumors that Apple had invested $1.2 billion in a Toshiba plant for building LCD panels, now eyes are on Sharp as Nikkei business daily reported that Apple and Sharp are investing another $1.2 billion to build a facility to produce screens for Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch touchscreen products. Apple is said to be the primary financial backer of the Sharp plant.

The Sharp plant is expected to begin production in the latter half of 2012, making it likely that screens produced from Sharp will arrive in time for a mid-year iPhone launch in 2013. The timeline would make it likely that those screens would appear in an iPhone 7 if Apple’s historical annual launch schedule for a June-July iPhone release holds up.

Toshiba’s plant, which is expected to be completed sooner, would make Toshiba’s panels arrive potentially in an iPhone 6.
