It looks like there is renewed interest in the touchscreen portable music player market that’s being dominated by Apple’s iPod Touch. Creative is the latest challenger in the market, and the company is hoping that the FCC will approve its Zen Touch 2 as the next iPod Touch-killer.
Other notable phone-less music players powered by Google’s Android operating system that would rival the Zen Touch 2 include the Samsung Galaxy Player and Cowon’s D3 Plenue.
Wireless Goodness reports that the Zen Touch 2 has been available for some time in Europe, and the recent filing for FCC approval suggests that Creative is hoping to expand its touchscreen media player into the U.S. market. The device has a 3.2-inch 480 X 320 resistive touchscreen along with WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth, and microSD expansion slot.
The device will be powered by Android 2.1, which means that there won’t be support for Adobe Flash 10.1 Mobile. The Zen Touch 2 also has a 2-megapixel camera sans flash on the rear side.
According to the European site for Creative, the device is available in 8 GB and 16 GB varieties.
The real question here is: Since it’s not a phone, will it get the app market? I’d say it’s DOA without that.
