Grey Market Resellers Prevent iPad Buyers From Getting iPad 2

Published

on

An Asian group of grey market iPad resellers is wiping out inventory of iPad 2 stock at a New York Apple retail store, preventing ordinary consumers from having the chance to get their hands on the coveted second-generation tablet.

The highly orchestrated operation is managed by a leader who pays out money to his team of 200 members waiting in line. Those members would buy out all inventory of iPad 2s at the Apple store and would turn around and re-sell the tablets at higher prices in the States and in China where the tablets have not yet launched.

Asked how much the top of the line 64 GB WiFi + 3G iPad 2 model would go for and the group says that it could fetch double the Apple asking price of $829. The New York Post writes, “Then, his boss jumped in — and said it would be “best if you bring $2,000.””

Apple employees in the store said there wasn’t much that they can do about it.

Sure they could stop it, they could simply lock to the device to an iTunes account registered to the purchasers address for 1 month.

Apple should make it more difficult for them & limit 1 per person!

I was in line today and can attest to the shady shades in line. Apple was originally selling iPads with a credit card to help prevent this type of shenanigans. People grumbled so now this is what we get. Hopefully people don’t support these grey market sellers and this type of arbitrage will come to an end. I ordered mine online.

Well, give them a break – they’re still trying to break even for Beanie Babies.
