Intel Prematurely Announces Asus Eee Pad Slider to Use Atom CPU

While it was believed that the Asus Eee Pad Slider Android Honeycomb tablet would be utilizing a dual-core ARM-based NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor at the CES unveiling, Intel had put together a page suggesting that Asus’s Android tablet would be utilizing an Atom-based CPU instead. Though the page has since been removed, Liluputing had managed to grab a screenshot from the Intel announcement from the Intel Developer Forum in China, which highlighted 35 tablets to use Intel’s Atom CPU.

Earlier, it was suggested that Atom-based Honeycomb Android 3.0 tablets will be coming later this year, and if true, the Asus Eee Pad Slider may be among the first of those Android tablets powered by Intel’s processor.

If this is true, it will mark a big entry for Intel into the mobile space. Since selling off its ARM chip manufacturing business to Marvell, Intel has had a difficult time positioning its Atom chipsets in mobile phones and tablets. ARM has largely dominated the mobile space while Atom chips have been used primarily for Windows-based systems, like netbooks and netvertible tablets.

It’s unclear if Intel’s removal of the page suggesting the Asus Eee Pad Slider will be utilizing an Atom chip is due to incorrect information or if it’s a result of Asus not prepared to make such an announcement.

Like the Asus Eee Pad Transformer, the Eee Pad Slider marries a large 10.1-inch tablet display to a keyboard. The device’s form factor is similar to the Samsung Slider, but utilizes Android 3.0 as the underlying OS rather than Windows 7 on the Samsung device. The Samsung Slider is powered by an Atom chip.
