State Farm iOS App Grades Your Driving Habits
Amidst all the hullabaloo about Apple tracking your location data comes word of an App from State Farm called Driver Feedback App that grades you on your driving habits using the GPS and accelerometer. State Farm swears up and down that it doesn’t collect any of the data. But the App does give you a score that takes a look at your acceleration, braking and cornering habits.
On the surface it sounds like a decent idea, but I’ve got two questions. I occasionally flop my phone on the seat next to me (especially in warm weather months when I’m wearing a tee shirt) and it will jostle around a bit even when I’m not being a daredevil. I’m wondering how that will read on the sensors. And secondly, if I do have the App in my shirt pocket, I’m guessing I shouldn’t bounce around if I’m playing a catchy tune. I’m also guessing that the App comes with instructions not to pay attention to it while driving.
And by the way, Boy Genius Report is saying that Apple is readying iOS 4.3.3 to take care of that nasty data tracking thing for those concerned. Supposedly it addresses the following and is due out in a couple of weeks.
- The update will no longer back up the location database to iTunes.
- The size of the location database will be reduced.
- The location database will be deleted entirely when Location Services are turned off.
- Battery life improvements.
- iPod bug fixes.
