300 Reasons You Should Think Twice About a WireFly Cell Phone Deal
Wirefly has some of the greatest deals around, with discounts of $50 to $170 off the 2 year contract pricing direct from major carriers like Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile; but these good deals come with a catch — an additional early termination fee of $300 for smart phones if you cancel your contract in the first 6 months.
WireFly ETF Terms
This early termination fee from WireFly is on top of your carrier discount and is WireFly’s way to recoup the extra savings on high end smartphones for users who cancel early. Unlike the Early Termination fee from carriers, this one only lasts 6 months.
From the WireFly Terms and Conditions Page:
By accepting this Instant Savings Discount, you agree to repay $200 of this discount ($300 for smartphones and netbooks) and authorize us to charge your credit card in repayment of this amount if, you signed up for a 2 year agreement and during the 181 days after your new equipment is activated, your wireless carrier notifies us that the services you purchased have been suspended, disconnected, or deactivated, or if you return your purchase outside of the return and exchange provisions of our 30-day Satisfaction Guarantee.
This is in the agreement when you purchase a new phone with discount through WireFly and can be avoided if you return the device within 30 days as part of the satisfaction guarantee. Based on these terms, you should make sure you like your phone and if not stick it out for 6 months to avoid a high cancellation fee.
WireFly spells out the events that could cause your credit card to be billed an ETF, including two that stand out as important to note.
- You transfer this equipment to another carrier line of service after it is activated
- The new line of service activated with your order is used to replace a pre-existing account
If you are planning to use a family member’s upgrade and then switch the phone to your number, you should email WireFly directly to make sure that this will not cause an ETF to be charged. If you are trying to get a promotional price by opening a new account, well you should think again.
Is the WireFly Discount Worth it?
With these restrictions is it worth getting a phone through WireFly? For most users the answer is yes. You still get the 30 day return period and the ETF only lasts for 6 months so you aren’t saddled with the extra cost for an entire contract. If you can’t live with a phone for 6 months then you are better off buying the device for full retail.
