Is Apple Recalling Verizon’s CDMA iPad 2 Mid-Shipment?

Published

on

Consumers who have purchased the CDMA version of Apple’s iPad 2 for Verizon’s network are reporting that Apple is recalling its popular tablet mid-shipment from China before they reach their doorsteps. Various customers account that upon tracking FedEx’s system, they found that delivery exceptions were listed in the system and that the courier is stating that packages are being returned to sender.

So far, Apple has not acknowledged the situation or confirmed any problems with the iPad 2 tablet. When the CDMA tablets launched earlier, Apple had acknowledged connectivity issues with Verizon’s network and had promised a fix. It’s unclear if the new batch that was being sent out to customers were later recognized to have those connectivity issues or other issues.

One customer accounts, “Apple may be having problems with Verizon iPad 2. I was supposed to receive my ipad2 64gb today but all of a sudden fedex sent it back to apple and said that apple requested it\’s return. Apple\’s customer care seems to be unaware or unwilling to acknowledge the problem. I went on the discussion boards on apple.com and there are a number of people discussing the same thing and all posters so far have all ordered Verizon ipad2\’s.”

There are many more accounts of shipments of Verizon iPad 2 being yanked mid-shipment and being returned to Apple on 9to5mac. Apple has so far not released any information as to the cause of the incident, and whether this is a more contained incident or is affecting all new iPad 2s for Verizon that’s coming off the production line.

As Apple’s iPad 2 inventory is already constrained, and many stores are frequently out of stock, the latest recalls may be another blow to consumers who are already waiting for their tablets.

Though Verizon Wireless had offered the first-generation iPad in its retail channels, those models were sold bundled with Novatel’s MiFi mobile hotspot routers and did not have native 3G mobile broadband access. The new iPad 2 are the first models to support the carrier’s 3G network utilizing Qualcomm’s new Gobi chip, which can theoretically support worldwide roaming capabilities on GSM/UMTS networks. However, Apple did not implement a SIM card on the Verizon model, unlike the AT&T model, so it won’t be possible to roam with the CDMA iPad despite the Gobi’s chipsets capability to offer that feature.

This is really interesting as the Verizon iPad 2 is the only version iPad2Tracker.com shows is ALWAYS in stock. The AT&T models is next to impossible to find, so I really wonder if AT&T decided to hold off until Apple ironed out all of the problems.

I tracked my husband’s surprise birthday gift for a week via fed ext he ipad2 Verizon. It was to be delivered by a certain time when I called fed ex 10 after the time came & went. I was told the same thing Apple had fed ex to return. I immed. called Apple and got the run around & was told to wait for an email in a few days. HELL NO!!! I placed my order back in May and now you do not want to answer my questions. I got ahold of my Apple rep who said she had no idea what was going on & I was the first person to tell her of the problem. At the end of the day I was so angry that Apple is giving me a $50.00 credit which is fine. I then got home and saw a email that my payment was now due for something that I do not have and do not know when I will get. Apple tells me I still have to pay the bill because evebtually I will get the ipad2. Their customer service is the pits and I am not paying for something that I do not have and do not know when I will get. Was told all all shipments where not ging out until the people whos ipad2 where reissued as a priority.

The Verizon’s 3g network access issue
due to the same MEID code has not attained the critical issue status. The users
with this problem are serviced well with a exchange or a scan. Glad it was a
correctable issue and not a grave mistake for the carrier and the users.
