iCloud Back Ups Include App Data, Fills Up Fast, Bounces Emails When Full

By  |  3 Comments

The iCloud service from Apple will officially launch this Fall alongside iOS 5, but for developers and brave end users, the service is live right now. The iCloud service includes 5GB of storage for free, which sounds like a lot, but is quite easy to fill up. When you do fill up your iCloud storage, Apple will send you an email to let you know that you can buy more storage and that until you have free space, emails sent to your .me address will bounce.

iCloud Storage includes app data

The  iCloud storage allows you to backup your iPad to the cloud when you plug it in at night so that you don’t lose your photos and data. Normally you would backup to your PC or Mac, but with iCloud that process isn’t needed. It’s actually pretty easy to use a lot of storage on the iPad.

While Apple won’t count the actual app against your iCloud storage, the data those apps associate with will be backed up to the cloud and count against your storage. Apps like iMovie and GarageBand can quickly eat up your available storage on iCloud as well as your photos that are backed up the Photo Stream.

Apple has not announced pricing for additional iCloud storage, but we do know that you will be able to purchase varying levels of storage when iOS 5 launches this fall from your iPad, Mac or PC.

I’m still “cloudy” over one issue, is iCloud backup the same as iTunes Wifi Sync? For example, could I not be subscribed to iCloud, but still have the iTunes Wifi sync functionality?

Yes that is a free feature, along with the OTA updates
