WiFi Sync, New Lock Screen UI, and Other Changes in iOS 5, Beta 2

Users and developers are reporting several new features and changes that went live with the recent release of iOS 5 beta 2 for developers. The update, which is available to registered developers officially and unofficially to hackers and tinkerers, clock in at 817 MB and is not an OTA update at this time, unfortunately. In addition to containing code references for OTA updates over 3G and WiFi networks, the latest beta also enables WiFi sync for iTunes on the Mac–sorry PC users–as well as a new lock screen notifications UI.

The new lockscreen notifications UI, if it’s accessed when the iPhone is idle or in standby without any human intervention, now shows a bubbly notification towards the center of the screen with larger text rather than the more compressed list view that started at the top of the lock screen from the first beta.

Additionally, another feature that was noticed is that in the Messages (SMS and iMessage) application, if the on screen software keyboard is activated, swiping downwards from the message through the keyboard to the lower portion of the screen would de-activate the keyboard so that you can view more of your messages without the software keyboard taking up space on your display. Users who use iMessage–rather than the SMS feature of iOS’s messaging app, should also note that iMessage for iOS 5 beta 2 will not be able to communicate with iMessage for iOS beta 1. In order to successfully communicate in iMessage, both parties must be on the same beta version.

Moreover, on the Notification Center, if no notifications are present, the pull-down will just say ‘No Notifications.’

A new beta version of iTunes 10.5 is also required to sync computers with iOS 5 beta 2.
