Getty Google Partnership Makes Museum-Going Interactive
The Getty Museum in Los Angeles, California along with Google is bringing high tech to art lovers via Google Goggles, which hopes to engage museum visitors with additional content, background, and history on individual art pieces in the Getty collection. Perhaps housing one of the largest private art collections in the world, the Getty Museum has partnered with Google to allow users to use the Google Goggles app on their smartphones to quickly capture an image of the art piece and look up additional information about the work from the Getty’s mobile website, providing additional information beyond the description of the piece that sits on a tag next to the artwork on the museum’s wall.
Google Goggles is a free downloadable app on iOS and Android that allows users to use their smartphone camera to perform a visual search. Instead of having to type out what they are searching for, especially in situations may not know what it is they are searching for, Goggles help to identify the object of their curiosity visually and return search results to them to peruse.
This level of engagement makes art more interactive, engaging, and personal, and it’s all being empowered by smartphone technology. Rather than having self-guided audio tour, which isn’t customizable to each individual museum-goer, the Getty initiative brings art to a personalized level where users can engage where and when they want to.
