HP TouchPad - WebOS Slate

James Kendrick links to some information that we might be seeing the first webOS TouchPad update around the end of July or so. In a boston.com article on HP’s realignment is the following excerpt:

Bradley said in an interview that July 1 was a “soft launch’’ for the TouchPad and that more advertising will start on July 17. The company also plans to issue a software update for the tablet in about 10 days, he said.

I”m not sure I’d bank on that time frame yet, but perhaps it is encouraging news. And I’m just going to say this. If July 1 was a “soft launch” I’m anxious to see what a “hard” push would mean.

On other HP TouchPad news you might want to check out this excellent editorial from Dan Ramierz called Dear HP: Get Your Act Together.

You don’t think there’s any pressure on HP to make this update something special do you? Or as HP CEO Leo Apotheker would say “perfect” as in  this quote prior to the TouchPad’s release:

“The one lesson I have learned from this, and I’m driving my engineers crazy with this, is that we will not release a product that isn’t perfect.”

I don’t think he drove the engineers crazy enough.

I’ve been using my 16GB model for a week-and-a-half, and it isn’t bad.  I haven’t had the crashes, slowness or instability that others comment on.  I find the OS intuitive and responsive.  It does integrate well with Exchange and other e-mail services, instant messaging, etc.  The number of apps is large enough that I don’t feel that I have seen the entire catalog yet, and the hardware, while not the brush-aluminum of the iPad, isn’t as bad as others make it out.
