Apple Releases Another iOS Update – and It’s Already Jailbroken

By  |  3 Comments

It seems like it was just last week that Apple released iOS 4.3.4, which patched the exploit that allowed the iPad 2 (and all other iOS devices) to be jailbroken. Actually, it was just last week. Well, Apple wasted no time issuing another update, this one bringing it up to 4.3.5 for most devices. The Verizon iPhone’s version of the update is numbered 4.2.10.

This latest firmware update addressing an additional security issue (unrelated to jailbreaking). Speaking of jailbreaking, developers have already found success in applying a tethered jailbreak to the new update (for all devices but the iPad 2).

This is from Apple’s knowledge base article regarding the update:

Available for: iOS 3.0 through 4.3.4 for iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 (GSM), iOS 3.1 through 4.3.4 for iPod touch (3rd generation) and later, iOS 3.2 through 4.3.4 for iPad.

Impact: An attacker with a privileged network position may capture or modify data in sessions protected by SSL/TLS.

Description: A certificate chain validation issue existed in the handling of X.509 certificates. An attacker with a privileged network position may capture or modify data in sessions protected by SSL/TLS. Other attacks involving X.509 certificate validation may also be possible. This issue is addressed through improved validation of X.509 certificate chains.

Those users who are jailbroken already should steer clear of this update, as an untethered jailbreak isn’t likely to be available anytime soon (tethered jailbreaks require you to connect to a PC or Mac everytime you reboot your iDevice).

If you end up stuck on the new 4.3.5 firmware and you want to jailbreak, you can do so with Redsn0w. The same instructions from our post about the previous update will work with this update too.

Wait, so after downloading a 600mb update last week, I’m expected to re-download the entire OS AGAIN for another ‘small update’? Apple does realise that some people suffer under capped internet connections right? Screw that! I’m waiting for iOS5!

At least when ios5 comes out, under the feature listing, it will be able to update itself without computer and update only changed features…. so, in other words, update it at Starbucks or wifi spots…. :)
