Droid Bionic Gets Detailed in Pre-Launch Review, Battery Size Confirmed

Published

on

I think we’ve exhausted the pricing and the release date for the Motorola Droid Bionic for today so lets move onto some other stuff that actually might be a little bit more exciting for some of you. Some clear, crisp photos and a pre-launch review from someone who has his hands on a Droid Bionic. The review is from a guy named Joe the Insider on the Android Central forums and he apparently was able to get his hands on one of those demo units that we saw show up earlier today.

So, yes, here you see some new, gorgeous looking photos of the Droid Bionic but those really aren’t the most important things here. No, the most important thing here is the quick review.

UPDATE: You can  read our full Droid Bionic Review here

Droid Bionic

Joe’s quickie review is pretty much all praise for one of the most anticipated phones in a long while and that is probably what those of you who are planning on getting this phone wanted to hear.

This is what he had to say:

Initial thoughts. The phone is extremely light and is actually pretty thin. The battery is 1730 mah and is pretty big. The screen is contoured on the edges, and it comes with a 16GB microSD card. Power button is in a awkward spot though. It’s on the left shoulder of the phone. It’s a pretty big phone as well, its along the lines of the charge.

Start up is ridiculously fast, sound is surprisingly good. The back is plastic like the D3. The camera problem that was widely talked about this the D3 is a NON factor. It boots up right away with no lag. The Pentile screen looks a little different, but to be honest I love the Pentile screen.

The glass on the screen is very nice. It’s hard to explain, but it compliments the actually screen. I want to stress that there is NO redraw. If you’re not familiar with what that is, the D3 has an issue where after closing a app that’s pretty heavy on RAM or it would have to load all apps and widgets on the screen and it would take about 5 secs before it finished and was extremely annoying.

That confirms the talk of a big battery, 1730mAh is pretty good, and it looks like the only complaint he has is that the power button is in a strange spot. Could be a lot worse, huh?  It also appears that the lag that the Droid 3 has, I talked about it in my review, is non-existent on the Droid Bionic.

Droid Bionic

So far so good folks. I especially like the part about thin and ‘extremely’ light.

Who’s excited for September 8th?

I had to get a new phone last week have been waiting, but my D1’s screen quit working had to have a phone. I got the X2. It will be day 15 when the bionic comes out. What is the chance verizon will overlook the 14 day return period so that I can get the bionic.

Take it back the night of the 14th day before store closes….most at 9 p.m.  Take the next morning off of work and go get one when the store opens. Problem solved.

You can’t go 1 day without a phone? Return it the day before.

    This guy :):)

Still eligible for my last “new every two” ($100 off) deal with Verizon.  Apparently I can only get that at a Verizon store and not at Costco :-

I’m not going crazy over the Costco bundle, so I think I’ll just save the $100

Why is my last new every 2 only worth $50…any ideas on how I can work that one out?

I have a funny feeling that those who just couldn’t wait, and decided to buy something else, will be kicking themselves after the release of this phone.

I really like your post. Im due for my new every two. Would it be smart to go to Costco or go to Verizon? I get a discount with Verizon and new every two. Tired of my DX ;( sooooooo ready for the Bionic!

Costco’s online signup for contract renewal completely avoids any language about grandfathering in unlimited data.  It gives you options for tiered data plans.  While grandfathering unlimited data may be available at Costco, this is enough to get me into Verizon’s store instead.

FYI – Best Buy, while they can’t give you the $50.00 New Every Two discount, their enhanced warranty is excellent! I asked two people at Best Buy to verify and although it costs $2.00 more a month than Verizon’s warranty, there is ZERO deductible for damage claims! If you’re one that drops their phones, this can pay for itself with the first replacement! They also have a program where, for a small fee, give you a stated dollar amount you’ll get when you trade in your handset. We bought  a new handset a couple of weeks ago (no this one couldn’t wait) and it’s going to get us over $200 trade in value in 18 months. That’s more than what I paid for the handset! It’s not for everybody but the Best Buy option is one to consider. Go and ask your own questions and find out.

For my own handset upgrade, (Bionic of Prime) I may go directly through VZW for my $50.00 discount. If I get the Bionic, I don’t know if the Costco bundle will for for me. I dropped Costco earlier this year in favor of Sam’s Club. So, to go through Costco, I’d lose my $50 (NE2) and add a new $50 membership. Ouch…

He must be smoking somethin. I’ve seen the pentile display on the X2 and the D3 and it’s really really awful.

What low res crap were ya looking at? I’ve got the Pentile sceen and it looks great. Brighter and more accurate than even the newest amoleds and higher res too.

Movies and hi res pics look sharp and the coating lets you see the screen in direct sunlight.

Finally one of the reps from Verizon finally confirmed the launching of the Droid Bionic on the 8th. I’ve been patiently waiting for it since January of this year. I really do think it’s gonna be well worth the wait and trouble surrounding this magnificent marvel of a smartphone. All I can say is ” Stay curious my friends “.

Why did Verizon ask people for their email address? They told us nothing about the Bionic.

I’m with you. I’ve been barely hanging on for months with my OG Droid that’s failing in multiple ways, unable to know my options even though I submitted my email address almost immediately when they put up the Bionic signup page. I’ll get the phone because I need it, but I feel manipulated and disrespected by their marketing approach. And if the Droid Prime is better, I’ll change to it instead. Sign me “One Unhappy Camper,” despite about 10 years with five mobile lines at Verizon.

I may be wrong, but I thought the Bonic had a 1930 mAh battery?
