5 Reasons I Want an iPhone 4s Jailbreak Now

Published

on

As soon as the iPhone 4S was announced, I started hearing the question, “When will there be an iPhone 4S jailbreak?”

Forgetting the fact that the first rule of iPhone jailbreaking is to never ask when, we’ve been doing our best to follow the jailbreaking efforts of iOS 5 and the iPhone 4S.

iOS 5 is already jailbroken on a number of devices. Here’s How to Jailbreak iOS 5 for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad, and iPod touch.

An iPhone 4S jailbreak is, unfortunately, still some time off.

The dev-team is working on it and reportedly has a lead on jailbreaking the iPhone 4S and the iPad 2. These two devices are proving more of a challenge thanks to the new A5 processor, but progress is happening.

iPhone 4S Jailbreak wishlist

While we wait for an iPhone 4S jailbreak to arrive, I wanted to share 5 reasons I want an iPhone 4S jailbreak sooner, rather than later. While several of these address my concerns of switching from Android to iPhone, I’m sure most of you will find at least one of these that you like.

Jailbreaking your iPhone or iPad adds extra features that Apple has not included or will not allow in the app store. These additional settings can give your phone new powers, and in many cases improve on the usability of iOS 5.

IntelliscreenX

This awesome jailbreak only iPhone tweak will soon bring a better notification center to your lockscreen.

If you want more than just notifications on your lockscreen, but also access to the full email, your calendar and more, this is the app for you. Check out the demo video below to see why I am so excited about IntelliscreenX

This looks like an essential app for users like me, who want to add new widgets to the lockscreen.

Notification Center Widgets

I can’t add widgets to the homescreen like I can on Android, but I want to add some customizations to the lockscreen.

I’m looking forward to adding widgets like, FavoriteContacts, which allows you to have one touch dialing to your favorite contacts.

Mac Stories has a nice collection of iOS 5 Notification Center widgets to check out if you need something to do while you wait for an iPhone 4S jailbreak.

I also want to add easy access to iPhone 4S settings to the notification center, which is so important it get’s its own breakout.

Settings Widgets

Coming from Android, one of the things I noticed right away, is how long it takes to get to settings like WiFi, Bluetooth and Screen brightness on the iPhone 4S.

If you hate tapping and tapping, you’ll want to install SBSettings or BBSettings. These apps sit in your notification center and allow you to quickly access important settings without leaving your app. Here’s a look at SBSettings in your Notification Center.

BBSettings adds other items like favorite apps, access to multitasking apps and the ability to look at iPhone usage statistics.

Better Google Voice Integration

Even after the Google Voice app comes back to the App Store, Google Voice integration will still lag behind what you get on Android.

If you don’t get why I love Google Voice so much, here’s why I love Google Voice.

Now that you know the joys of Google Voice, you get why I want to have tighter integration. This is also more important than ever, since I will be carrying an iPhone 4S and an Android phone on a regular basis.

The Phone GV Extentions allows you to integrate Google voice calling into your iPhone. This means no adding extra phone numbers or going to the app to make a call. Just set this up and you can make calls as normal without the need to take special steps. This will allow me to make calls using Siri, without worrying about which number shows up on the recipient’s caller ID.

In addition to the call portion, I am also excited about the SMS GV Extension which brings similar integration to your text messages.

With this extension, your text messages get sent through Google Voice, using the same Messages app that you would normally use. This means you can send messages using Siri, and have them sent through Google Voice. Fantastic!

Here’s a demo of the SMS GV Extension, not a whole lot to see, but you will notice that he is sending text messages over WiFi, with the cell network off.

My 3G

This is my first iPhone, so imagine my surprise when I tried to purchase an app and was told to connect to WiFi to download. The Amazon App Store on Android does this, but not the Android Market (at least not that I ever ran in to).

I understand the need, with capped data plans on most carriers, but there are still times when I want to download an app no matter what Apple thinks about my connection.

That’s where My 3G comes in. My 3G tricks your phone into thinking it is connected to WiFi. This lets you download apps that normally can’t be downloaded over 3G, and it also allows you to make and receive FaceTime calls on 3G.

My 3G

My 3G, an essential iPhone 4S Jailbreak App

While Jailbreaking is legal, Apple has said that it voids your warranty. This is important to keep in mind before jailbreaking your iPhone 4S. In most cases, you can jailbreak your iPhone and return to stock if you have issues, but know that you take a small amount of risk. For more, read our 5 reasons to jailbreak guide.

I don’t know what you’re talking about as far as the My 3G. On the Iphone 4S under Setting>Store there’s an option to “Use Cellular Data”. If you turn it on, it allows you to download from the app store over 3G. You don’t need to My 3G for that, just FYI…

Some apps won’t download over 3G and you can’t use FaceTime over 3G. So My 3G tricks your phone into thinking its on wifi so u can use FaceTime and download apps over 20mb over 3G.

You can use Facetime over 3G now and I’ve not encountered an issue downloading any apps (even over 20mb) over 3G since enabling “Use Cellular Data”. Now, on my Iphone 3G, it was absolutely necessary to use the My 3G, but it seems Apple addressed these problems with the Iphone 4S and iOS 5.

You’re full of it dude, my settings show cellular data turned on in the store settings and still get an error when trying to download over 20mb and no facetime over 3G on my iPhone 4S. Get a life.

You cannot download a file over 20MB if you’re using 3g network…you must use my3g to do that

Yes you do if the file is bigger than 12 mb. Learn your shit before you post

JUST FYI Janesmith, you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about, go creep on other websites and news articles- the ones for beginners.

The biggest reason that I use My3G is for Netflix & YouTube. If you are on a 3G connection, those apps detect that & you end up streaming a lower resolution video. With My3G, you get the best res available because the app thinks you are on WiFi.

I am fortunate enough to have unlimited data on both my iPhone & my iPad so it is a necessity to get the best quality available. I do resent the training wheels Apple forces on us sometimes.

The other main reason to get My3G is for FaceTime. It allows you to do it over 3G & it really doesn’t cost much data at all.

My3g does more than just allow XMB<20.

It addresses streaming pipe size and quality, FT/3G etc

I just switched from the HTC EVO to the iPhone 4s and I am loving it!  I am on sprint so google voice works amazingly well!  Sprint has the ability to integrate with google voice to use your sprint number as a google voice number, so any calls I make from my iPhone automatically are using google voice.  I get calls on my computer and my phone.  I can’t wait for the 4s Jailbreak… hopefully it doesn’t take as long as the initial jailbreakme 4.3.3 one took, almost 6 months only to be patched less than a month later…  here’s hoping and praying for a userland jailbreak soon!  or a bootrom exploit that will be forever unpatchable! :)

QuickDo is another jailbreak app that I’m missing since upgrading to the 4S.  It allows you to replace most of the home button actions with gestures.  The more you can avoid using the home button the better–it and the other physical buttons just don’t last for two years with frequent use.

Thank you for being rude. :) I love that! I tried on my phone as well as a friend of mine, just for the hell of it, doing Facetime over the 3G network connection the first day we got the phones. It worked then and I was stunned. I wasn’t on any wifi network at the time and neither was my friend. HOWEVER, I recently tried it again due to all the negative comments on here. It seems Facetime isn’t working over 3G anymore. I don’t know if they intentionally allowed, then blocked it due possibly to high bandwidth, but it DID WORK. I’m not a beginner for the idiot that made that remark. I know what My 3G is, I had it on my Iphone 3G before this one. It works well. I thought Apple finally had come around and addressed people’s gripes with not being able to download apps over 20mb and Facetime over 3G, but I guess it was too good to be true. I mostly miss my 5 icon dock/5 row icons, sbs settings, ifile and terminal, at least that’s what I can recall I used more than anything. An untethered jailbreak right now would be VERY nice, hope the Dev Team cranks out those user-land exploits they say they have for the A5 sooooon.

How about bein able to use my wifi iPad on MyWI on my unlimited AT&T Plan on my 4S, and saving wifi fees at hotels and etc

    • Djs4real

      10/22/2011 at 8:12 am

Be careful with MyWi on AT&T, they are cracking down on illegal tethering.  They recently threatened to take away my unlimited data and switch me to a 2Gb phone + 2 Gb tether data plan.  so I stopped using MyWi and have been using more data directly to the iphone than I did when I was tethering. I run pandora all day, download every song, app update, and large dropbox files over 3G.  Sorry I like reading my email in outlook, it’s my freaking connection I’ll send whatever packets I want across it.  i can’t believe I let them strong arm me.  When I asked for proof (headers with 2 mac addresses or some other way to prove tethering of the device) they said they couldn’t divulge that info.

Technically you reasons are….. I want to jailbreak my phone so it looks more like android
