How To Teach Siri Contact Relationships

Siri is a pretty impressive personal assistant for your iPhone 4S. Siri is even more impressive, because she can remember relationships. you can use Siri to add contact relationships in seconds.

If you go look at your contact card in iOS 5, you can add your spouse easily enough, but if you want to add many more, the easiest way to do this is to tell Siri who your contacts are.

Siri will use a number of pre-created relationships, or can create custom labels. When you set up custom relationships, your imagination and what you feel comfortable saying in public, are your limits.

To setup your relationships with Siri, you just need a few minutes and a semi-quiet room. After you configure your contacts, you can ask Siri to “call my Mom” or “text my sister” instead of using their full names.

How To Add Relationships With Siri

Teach Siri Your Relationships

  • Open Up Siri by holding your Home Button for two seconds.
  • When Siri Beeps, say, “Josh Smith is My Best Friend.”
  • Obviously, you should insert your own names and relationships here.
  • Siri will read back the relationship to you, so that you can confirm your new relationship.
  • You can visit your contact page to see all of your relationships.

Setting up relationships for those you call or text frequently is a good idea. Not only will this help you use Siri more efficiently, you get to  use nicknames like you would in real life.

If you want to have fun with this, you can add your friends by their old nicknames, use your favorite pet name for your boss and much more.

If you want to have a good laugh, Tell Siri that  a contact is your “favorite profanity here” and wait for Siri to confirm this relationship. I don’t recommend actually adding this as a contact’s relationship, but it’s good for a laugh.

According to several sources, you need to sync your contacts with iCloud, eXchange or Gmail over Exchange to make all these relationships work.

When  you tell Siri who you are by selecting your name out of  your contacts, make sure that the contact is saved on the phone itself and not saved in a group (exchange contacts etc) because custom labels only work on contacts that are saved on the phone itself. I couldn’t understand why She would confirm who my father was but then add him as a manager.

Siri references the Nickname field. Add a Nickname to a contact, Siri will search for the contact with that nickname.
Add a Nickname for yourself if you want Siri to call you by another name as well

    Cheers !
