Now Offering In-Store Pickup in San Francsico

Apple is now giving online shoppers the option to pickup merchandise at its three San Francisco stores instead of having iDevices shipped to them. Apple will be rolling out the in-store pickup option nationwide in time for the holiday shopping season.

Shoppers in the San Francisco area will now see the “pick up” option next to items that are available at the Stownstown, Chestnut St or Stockton St. Apple stores. The initial rollout of this service is strictly limited to these three stores for the time being.

So why would anyone want to order online and pick up their iGoods at an Apple store rather than having them delivered? Nobody likes waiting, especially with the holiday season right around the corner. The certainty of being able to pick up a gift ¬†comforting¬†than hoping and praying you don’t miss the UPS guy. And sometimes overnight shipping just isn’t good enough, especially if you order late in the week and have to account for two extra days for your package to arrive.

The service is also a nice time saver. While San Francisco is a relatively small city, it can take 30 to 45 minutes to get from one Apple store to another if the item you’re looking for isn’t available at the first.

Before you get too excited about Apple’s new in-store pickup option, it’s important to note that it won’t let you jump ahead in line for those awaiting an iPhone 4S.

Apple is hardly the first electronics retailer to offer in-store pickup. Best Buy is just one company that’s offered the service for years.
