Apple Suggests Samsung Make Cluttered, Square, Thick Tablets and Phones

Apple and Samsung have been going back and forth about the design of the Galaxy Tab for months now, and it seems that Apple has decided it was time to help Samsung out.

Apple offered up a list of ways Samsung could change the Galaxy phones and the Galaxy Tab 10.1 to avoid a sales ban. Reportedly the new Galaxy Tab 10.1N doesn’t meet these requirements to Apple’s satisfaction.

Some of the suggestions, you can see on devices like the Galaxy Nexus, but most of these solutions read like a David Letterman Top Ten list of fictional solutions to the design bickering. In fact, the list is so out there I would have thought it was a joke if I didn’t see the legal document Apple filed to give Samsung some of the worst design advice possible.

In short, Apple would really like Samsung to make a square tablet, with sharp corners, with a bedazzled front and a thick form factor.

Seriously, I’m not kidding.

The Verge waded through the mind numbing court filing to find the following design suggestions from Apple to Samsung. It turns out the best way to prevent competing tablets from looking nice is to try and legislate ugliness.

11 Tablet and Smartphone Design Tips from Apple

Smartphone Design Tips

  • Front surface that isn’t black.
  • Overall shape that isn’t rectangular, or doesn’t have rounded corners.
  • Display screens that aren’t centered on the front face and have substantial lateral borders.
  • Non-horizontal speaker slots.
  • Front surfaces with substantial adornment.
  • No front bezel at all.

Tablet Design Tips

  • Overall shape that isn’t rectangular, or doesn’t have rounded corners.
  • Thick frames rather than a thin rim around the front surface.
  • Front surface that isn’t entirely flat.
  • Profiles that aren’t thin.
  • Cluttered appearance.

Perhaps Samsung should just go ahead and introduce the Pyramid Pad with a complementary pack of stickers to keep the front cluttered.

What do you think of these design suggestions? Should Apple be the only company that can make beautiful phones and tablets?

No way. Apple is afraid of samsung. Really afraid. And these are the responses to that fear. I’ve been reading a lot about faulty apple products reacently and that wasn’t the case a couple months back.
Samsung is out there, making beautifull smartphones and tablets, no one should say or ban how a company builds ones own products.

Hahaha… this is too funny. Go ahead Samsung, make it beautiful. Just make it unique. Have some pride in your own aesthetic.

Thing that gets me is the brain-dead anti-Apple sentiment.  Samsung publicly said they were redesigning, and came out with something that was a blatant copy to the point that their own employees can’t tell the difference!

Apple did nothing wrong – whether or not you believe they should DEFEND their patents is one thing, but please be real here – it is obvious that Samsung was trying to copy the iPad and iPhone with the Tab 10.1 and S2.  Get over it.  It is too bad since the S2 is such an awesome phone (I am a QWERTY guy so I’m waiting for the Droid 4, but have a friend who has one and it rocks)Now they have the Nexus, which is another great phone – and a different design.  They CAN do it.  They just need to deal with the fact that these products are blatant clones and move on.

Rounded corners? You know my table top from twenty years ago has rounded corners. Maybe the table table maker should sue apple. If you have confidence in your product, these things wouldn’t matter.
