Apple Bests HP’s Computer Shipments, Sells More iPhones Than Babies Born Each Day

We’ve reported that Apple had sold 15.4 million iPads and 37 million iPhones in the company’s first fiscal quarter of 2012, which included the holiday shopping season. So how exactly did a Tim Cook-led Apple perform and just what does those numbers really mean? Let’s do the math and translate these whopping sales numbers.

For starters, according to AppleInsider, the 15.4 million iPads is more than the world’s leading PC-maker sells in the same quarter. Hewlett Packard had reported that it sold 14.7 million PCs and it is estimated that the company sold an estimated 1.8 million TouchPad tablets based on the company’s webOS platform. Total, that means HP shipped 16.5 million computing and tablet products.

On the other hand, Apple’s record-setting quarter accounts for 15.4 million iPads and 5.2 million Macs. That means that Apple had shipped over 20 million computing and tablet products in the same quarter, besting HP’s spot. If PC sales figure include tablets, Apple would be the reigning ‘PC’ king in Steve Jobs’ post-PC era.

According to Apple’s Cook, the company admits that iPad sales are cannibalizing Mac sales to a small degree, but those very tablets are also cannibalizing Windows PCs to an even larger extent, and that’s something that Apple is happy with.

Onto iPhone sales. According to The Next Web, the 37 million iPhones sold is more than the number of babies brought into the world every day for the same period. 37.04 million iPhones means that Apple sold roughly 377.9K iPhones per day, which is more than the 371,000 births a day. In as much as China is flooding the world with its population increase, it seems that the country’s Foxconn factories are capable of producing even more iPhones than worldwide births.
