A new iPhone 4S accessory claims to successfully SIM unlock all models of the AT&T Apple iPhone 4S running iOS 5.0 and 5.0.1 firmware. As AT&T, unlike rivals Sprint and Verizon Wireless, does not yet offer its longstanding customers with SIM unlock codes, iPhone 4S models purchased through Apple or AT&T with carrier subsidization for AT&T’s 3G network won’t be given an unlock code. What that means, especially for business travelers, is that you will have to rely on AT&T to provide international roaming service and cannot obtain a cheap and readily available prepaid SIM card at your country of destination when traveling. Thanks to GPP, an iPhone 4S Unlock SIM can now successfully unlock the AT&T iPhones, though the tool, which comes as a hardware accessory, comes in at an expensive $85 plus shipping.
In order to use the tool to SIM unlock your iPhone, you do need to have an AT&T SIM card–in the case of the iPhone 4S, you’ll need access to a working or non-working micro SIM card for successful activation with Apple’s servers if the iPhone 4S has been recently restored to factory conditions or has not yet been activated out of the box. According to GPP, here’s how to successfully SIM unlock your iPhone 4S:
Turn off your iPhone 4S and place your SIM card along with your GPP SIM together into the custom iPhone 4S tray provided. Turn on your iPhone 4S and your phone will be unlocked and ready to use!
Rival carriers Sprint and Verizon Wireless often provide SIM unlock codes to customers in good standing. After 90 days of good service, subscribers can call customer service and request a SIM unlock code if they intend to do any international travel. GPP says that a tool that will be compatible with the Sprint iPhone 4S is being developed right now, so that should provide a second option for Sprint iPhone 4S customers. At launch, Sprint did not lock the SIM on its iPhone 4S models. GSM customers wanting an unlocked iPhone 4S that will work on AT&T in the U.S. and other international GSM carriers can purchase a fully unlocked model directly from Apple.
The manufacturer says that jailbreaking is not needed. If you’re interested in the GPP SIM unlock tool, you can visit the manufacturer’s website.
