Google Drive Now Live for Some, Beta Launch Imminent?

Published

on

We had reported that Google is looking to launch an iCloud and Dropbox competitor in the form of Google Drive, a cloud storage solution that integrates with other Google services, and it looks like the service is now live for some users according to Geek Wire.

A user of that site had sent in a screenshot showing the service and the possible icon and logo for the service. Google Drive will most likely be integrated with Google Docs. It’s unclear if Google will retain Google Docs or if the two services will be merged together in the future.

Google also offers cloud-based storage right now for Google Music. Users can upload their own content to Google Music, which currently is in beta, or if they purchase music directly from the Google Music storefront, that content will automatically be available on the cloud so that they can stream the content to their devices or download them at a later date. Google also operates Picasa for photo storage and YouTube for videos.

The service was also rumored to be a sort of sharing service. Rather than try to email larger files or documents to individual recipients, or share large videos on social networks, Google may use Google Drive as a catch-all. Users can upload all their large files to Google Drive, which would generate a link for the content. They can then email or share the link with friends and family that way.

It’s unclear when Google will launch Google Drive. It’s been speculated by the Wall Street Journal that the service may launch in the coming weeks or at the Google I/O conference as a freemium service where users can have access to the basic features for free and pay for additional storage.
