As we’re waiting for the iPad 3 or iPad HD we’ve heard a number of rumors about what will be inside the new Apple tablet. We’ve heard that it will be a quad-core chip and that it will be a dual-core chip inside the next iPad, but today some new sources say that both the iPad 3 and the new Apple TV will have a dual-core chip.
According to The Verge, both the new iPad and the new Apple TV will have a dual-core A5X CPU with and improved GPU. So the rumored quad-core A6 chip is apparently nowhere to be found in these new devices. The new A5X chip is reportedly a super-powered version of the A5 chip in the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S (the current Apple TV uses an A4 chip).
The new A5X chipset should support 1080p streaming on the Apple TV. The current version can only handle up to 720p video. With that power the new Apple TV would offer new streaming and mirroring functionality. So it should be able to better handle streaming and mirroring the new iPad 3 or iPad HD as well as Macs running Mountain Lion. Hopefully this could also mean 1080p movies and TV shows will start making their way to the iTunes Movie Store.
Although the A5X chip may power the new iPad, that doesn’t mean the A6 chip is gone. The Verge‘s source claims that the chip will find its way to market inside the iPhone 5. That would make the iPhone 5 the first quad-core iOS device when it launches later this year.
In addition to the dual-core chip, the source also gave some information about the rest of the iPad 3’s internals. The source confirmed that the iPad 3 or iPad HD would have LTE for Verizon and AT&T as two different models, along with a single model for 3G across AT&T, Verizon, and possibly Sprint. Of course there will also be a Wi-Fi only model available as well.
The new iPad is also said to hold more RAM, which would be great for users. It would mean that multitasking could work a bit better. It would also mean users could load more tabs in Safari without the fear of them refreshing when selected. That would make the iPad 3 much more useful for web surfing than either previous iPad.
