New Broadcom GPS Chip Brings Faster Lock Times, Better Location Accuracy
Broadcom has announced its new BCM4752 GPS receiver chipset for smartphones and mobile devices that promises a number of welcomed new improvements, including faster GPS lock times, space efficiency inside devices, power efficiency, and improved accuracy. What this means is that manufacturers of smartphones can deliver a better GPS and navigation experience to end-users while at the same time packing even power in their devices–such as a bigger battery or LTE chipset–or making their gadgets even slimmer.
According to Broadcom, the CDM4752 can acquire a satellite lock ten times faster than older generation chips and can deliver a more accurate real-time navigation experience in urban areas and inside buildings. The chipset collects data from four GPS constellations, including the GPS, GLONASS, QZSS and SBAS systems.
As the chipset is manufactured using the 40 nm CMOS process, the overall chip size is reduced by 44 percent and energy consumption is cut by 50 percent. Less space and low energy requirements mean that manufacturers can pack more high-powered radios–perhaps an LTE chipset–into the mix or trim their device sizes.
Moreover, the chipset can also improve location accuracy while indoors inside buildings through WiFi, NFC, and Bluetooth radio sensors.
The GPS chip is now shipping to manufacturers and while consumers generally don’t know or pay attention to what GPS sensor is inside their phones, having relied on my smartphone for GPS, this is definitely one chipset that I am hoping is coming to a phone near me in the future.

The architecture features a new Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) chip that significantly reduces time-to-first-fix (TTFF) for outdoor positioning applications, cutting the time smartphone users have to wait when first checking their position. The platform solution also uses data from inertial sensors, Wi-Fi access points (including those based on recently announced 5G WiFi) and future technologies such as Bluetooth beacons to enable ground breaking indoor positioning capabilities, such as “personal shopper” applications that can direct users to specific stores within shopping malls, and even specific shelves within those stores. In addition, platform integration with NFC enables smarter, more secure mobile payments, with users able to specify countries, cities or even stores where digital wallets can be used.
