Published

on

Now that the HTC EVO 4G LTE and the HTC One X are free to enter the U.S. we expect release dates in the coming days and weeks.

These two phones offer similar specs, but several differences are worth noting, especially for users who can pick which carrier they want to use.

The HTC EVO 4G LTE and the HTC One X may share some features and looks, but there are a number of differences that are worth investigating before you buy either of these phones.

The HTC One X runs on AT&T and the HTC EVO 4G LTE on Sprint. The HTC One X in this article refers to the U.S. version of the phone which is different from the international version.

Specs & Performance

Both the HTC EVO 4G LTE and the HTC One X use the same 1.5Ghz Snapdragon processor, which we found delivers the power needed to  keep the phone operating smoothly with the HTC Sense 4.0 interface loaded.

The phones perform much the same, though it is important to remember that the Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE does not have a network to connect to yet.

Both the HTC One X and the HTC EVO 4G LTE support simultaneous voice and data, so it is possible to talk and browse the web at the same time.

Both of the devices are the same size, with the same 4.7 inch 720P Super LCD display. Both of these devices come with a 8MP camera and a the new HTC ImageSense sensor.

When it comes to performance and specs, there are no standout differences between the HTC EVO 4G LTE and the HTC One X.

Design

While the two devices perform similarly, the design and features offer a number of differences that could make a major difference to the everyday use of the HTC EVO 4G LTE and the HTC One X.

As you can see in the image below, the HTC EVO 4G LTE has a glossy black upper, a red kickstand and a matte black metal cover. The HTC One X has a single backplate and no kickstand. The One X also has Beats Audio branding on the back, though both devices have this feature.

Neither of the phones has a user replaceable battery.

Features

Though the devices are part of the same family of phones, the HTC EVO 4G LTE packs a number of features not found on the HTC One X.

HTC EVO 4G LTE Kickstand

The HTC EVO 4G LTE has a kickstand.

The spring-loaded HTC EVO 4G LTE kickstand allows users to set the device in landscape mode to watch movies or video chat without holding the phone. This is a much-loved feature from the original EVO and it is good to see this DNA remains.

HTC EVO 4G LTE camera button

The EVO 4G LTE on Sprint also has a dedicated camera button. This makes it easier to snap photos once the camera is open, but it cannot launch the camera when the phone display is off or locked. The One X does not have a dedicated camera button, though third-party Android camera apps can turn a volume rocker into a shutter control.

HTC Evo 4G LTE MicroSD

Another feature of the HTC EVO 4G LTE not found on the One X is the Micro SD card slot that allows users to expand the memory of the EVO 4G LTE with a Micro SD HC card. The MicroSD card slot accepts up to a 32GB Micro SDHC card.

Sprint boasts that the HTC EVO 4G LTE is HD Voice capable. HD Voice is a new method of transmitting Wideband audio for voice calls. This delivers clearer calls that really do sound better. Unfortunately the Sprint Network won’t support HD Voice until later this year. AT&T has not shared plans for HD Voice.

HTC Evo 4g lte google wallet

The Evo 4G LTE has Google Wallet.

Once again Sprint’s Google Wallet partnership pays off. While the One X and the EVO 4G LTE both have NFC, only the EVO 4G LTE supports Google Wallet.

The HTC One X on AT&T comes in white or black, while the HTC Evo 4G LTE on Sprint is only available in the two-tone black and red finish.

Carrier Coverage

The HTC EVO 4G LTE and the HTC One X both support 4G LTE networks for 10X faster than 3G connections, but the One X is the only phone available on a carrier with a real 4G LTE network.

AT&T offers 4G LTE in 38 cities shown on the map below. Sprint currently offers no 4G LTE options, though they plan to roll out 4G LTE in Baltimore and Kansas City, followed by expansions in Atlanta, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio during 2012, with further expansions coming in 2013.

Until Sprint’s 4G LTE network rolls out wider,  the AT&T One X will connect much faster. Check out this AT&T 4G LTE speed test video to see how fast the AT&T 4G LTE connection is.

The video shows an iPad on AT&T 4G LTE, but the connection mirrors our results with the HTC One X.

If speed and 4G LTE coverage are important, AT&T has a clear lead with the HTC One X.

Pricing and Plans

Just as the phone features and network strengths differ, so do the prices and plans for the HTC One X and the HTC EVO 4G LTE.

The HTC EVO 4G LTE is available from Sprint for $199, and from WireFly for $149.

The HTC One X is sold on AT&T for $199 and at Amazon and RadioShack for $149.

When it comes to the actual plan, Sprint has a lead because it still offers unlimited data.

Unlimited Plans

  • Sprint – Unlimited Minutes and Unlimited Data – $99.99 a month
  • AT&T Unlimited Minutes and 5GB Data – $119.99 a month

Mid-Range Plans

  • Sprint – 900 Minutes and Unlimited Data – $89.99 a month
  • AT&T – 900 Minutes and 3GB Data – $89.99 a month

Cheapest Plans

  • Sprint – 450 Minutes and Unlimited Data – $69.99 a month
  • AT&T – 450 Minutes and 3GB Data – $69.99 a month

While the plan prices are similar, Sprint has a lead in Unlimited data and in the price of unlimited plans.

Recommendations

While the HTC EVO 4G LTE and the HTC One X are similar, there are enough differences to make users consider which carrier and version is the best fit. There’s no perfect phone, so in this case I suggest figuring out what is most important to you.

If you want to save money on an unlimited data plan, and love the extra features of the HTC EVO 4G LTE, Sprint is a good choice, though you’ll live without 4G LTE for a while.

If you are OK with limited data plans and don’t care for the added EVO 4G LTE features, AT&T’s 4G LTE network delivers significantly faster speeds in more cities.

Actually, you need to add another $10 to each of the Sprint plans since Sprint charges a mystery $10 premium fee for smartphones and thus AT&T looks cheaper for voice and data. Now, if you throw in text messaging considerations you will see that Sprint then goes back to the cheaper option since AT&T charges a whopping $20 extra for unlimited text messaging.

You Sir are correct Mr. Miller. If the difference between ATT and Sprint was only $10 I would go with ATT because they have a better and faster network, plus I rarely go over 5gb. ATT also unlocks the hotspot feature on the 5gb plan. But, I text alot. So the difference would be $30 per month. I cant swing that.

Sad thing about the ONE X is it is on AT&T, No Bars in more places! I have been with Sprint for over 10 years and have a work phone through AT&T (iPhone). My Sprint unlimited data with 450 min (on an EVO 4G) is always cheaper than the similar plan I have on the work iPhone. AT&T may have more coverage than other carriers but the quality of there service is mediocre at best. AT&T customer service is even worse. they know they have got you by the short and curly’s for at least 2 years. The $10 extra for premium service on Sprint is the same as the separate iPhone data plan AT&T has. Sprint is better hands down in quality and customer care.

I had sprint for 6yrs and recently switched over to at&t. Best signal ever in my location. Had ntelos and Verizon also. At&t is by far the best signal and call quality.

The mystery $10 charge per line from sprint on all new smartphones(even 3g) was to settle a class action suit over their 4g upchare before the 4g system was up and running(while chargeing the$10 for nthing. Similar to the new 4g lte I now pay for and do not get with my new HTC 4g lte)

You *have* to be kidding about Sprint ! The ONLY way I got a signal in Boise (other than the store 2 blocks away) was to stand on a picnic table while holding the phone up to *get* the signal and then I could “talk”. If the word “talk” means “what did you say again”? After 3 years of crap – I’m with AT&T . Even Sprint will tell you they are “working on their coverage areas” *after* you buy into their phone and plan ! Now I am certain everyone has had a bad experience with *some* carrier .. but after Verizon, Sprint and now AT&T – at least I can get the mountain areas again! Bah to Sprint – anyone with them knows they use other companies cell towers *and* spotty at best if you go into any apartment or building!
