ASUS 810 and 600 Windows 8 Tablets Debut at Computex

Published

on

Acer’s not the only vendor showing off Windows 8 tablets at Computex. ASUS has shown off Intel-based Windows 8 and ARM-based Windows RT convertibles.

(For the old-timers: Okay, technically, they’re not convertibles. They’re slates with detachable bases. And despite the claim in their press release, the Transformer Book (which appear to be a separate line from these tablets) is more than a decade too late to claim to be “the world’s first convertible notebook”. But whatever, everyone else seems to be going along with the Windows tablet retcon, so we’ll run with it. That out of the way…)

These ASUS tablets are part of the next generation to the current Transformer Prime line of slate tablets with detachable expansion bases for notebook-style functionality. The styling of the keyboard bases clearly draws from the design of Ultrabooks. I liken these to UB-style updates to the netbook-style tablets of a few years ago. Our friends at Netbooknews have hands-on video with both the 600 and 810 models.

ASUS Tablet 810

Despite its 11.6″ display, the 810 has the same 1366 x 768 resolution as the 10.1″ display on the 600. The other size-based difference is the SSD capacity, 64 GB on the 810 vs. 32 GB on the 600.

Where they greatly differ is the processor and OS. The 810 uses a next-gen Intel Atom processor to run Windows 8, while the 600 uses an ARM-based Tegra 3 to run Windows RT, i.e., the Metro UI-only version of Windows 8. This should be the key deciding point for anyone choosing between the two as only the 810 will have access to the traditional Windows interface and legacy applications.

Aside from that, the two share many of the same specs, including 10-point multi-touch + active pen input via a Wacom digitizer and IPS+ wide viewing display. Sensors include GPS, gyroscope, compass and NFC. Back camera is 8 MP, while front is 2. Connectivity includes WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0. No info on price or availability yet. Additional details in the press release excerpt below (PR and added details via Engadget).

The ASUS Tablet 810 (Windows 8) features the Next Generation Intel® Atom™ processor and 2GB of RAM with a 64GB eMMC for user storage. The 11.6″ display with 1366 x 768 resolution uses Super IPS+ technology to deliver superior visual clarity both indoors and out, while its 10-point multi-touch is complemented by Wacom digitizer stylus support.

The ASUS Tablet 600 (Windows RT) utilizes the NVIDIA® Tegra® 3 quad-core processor and 12-core GPU for outstanding mobile graphics performance; it also has 2GB RAM and a 32GB eMMC for user storage. The 600’s 10.1″ display with 1366 x 768 resolution features Super IPS+ technology for excellent readability both indoors and out.

Key to both the 810 and 600, however, is the supplied mobile dock that instantly transforms the tablets into compact clamshell ultraportables, complete with full QWERTY keyboards, a trackpad, additional USB expansion and a second battery for extended usage away from the power socket. Both tablets also include ASUS SonicMaster technology for supreme audio and built-in NFC sensors for easy syncing with other NFC-enabled devices.
