How to Keep Your Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon

Published

on

On June 28th, Verizon will introduce its new Shared Everything Plans which will offer customers a shared bucket of data for up to 10 devices. It will also mark the beginning of the end of grandfathered unlimited data plans on Verizon. However, that doesn’t mean that those with a grandfathered unlimited plan will be forced into a shared data plan.

Verizon has provided customers with a couple of ways to keep unlimited data. It’s expensive and many customers won’t want to fork over the money but the options are still going to be available, at least for now.

Customers with unlimited data plans don’t have to switch to another plan. Here are two ways that current customers on Verizon can keep unlimited data on Verizon, once their contract runs out, without having to switch to a Shared Everything plan.

Option # 1

The first option is only a temporary one and it will have to be taken advantage of before the June 28th cut off date.

Those that are currently in possession of an unlimited data plan on Verizon can purchase a discounted phone like the Samsung Galaxy S III today and still keep an unlimited data plan.

After June 28th rolls around though, this option will be dead.

Option # 2

The second option is Verizon’s long-term option for those that can’t or don’t want to pick up a subsidized device before Shared Everything plans arrive.

Verizon will allow those purchasing unsubsidized devices to keep unlimited data plans. That means that customers will have to shell out quite a bit of money for a device, right off the bat.

Subsidized devices on Verizon can run as high as $650. In fact, the top tier devices are likely going to cost that much. Low-end devices will cost a shade over $400.

Verizon has not said whether this offer is going to be permanent or not and it’s possible that the carrier could do away with it at some point down the road.

For now though, those are the only two options for those that wish to keep an unlimited data plan on Verizon. Those that don’t opt for either option will be subject to Verizon’s shared data plans or a tiered individual plan.

What about people with grandfathered unlimited data plan who hang on to their devices (Bionic, Galaxy Nexus…)? Will they be able to keep the unlimited data plan ? The two options mentioned sound like one has to buy a new phone to be able to keep the unlimited data plan.

Sure in that case you’re fine….but given the lifespan of a smartphone these days is about two years, well, good luck with that.

Kevin is exactly right, Dan. I put clarification in the article. If you are currently are grandfathered in, and your contract isn’t running out soon, you’re golden.

“If you are currently are grandfathered in, and your contract isn’t running out soon, you’re golden.”

And if your contact does run out, and you don’t change your phone or do anything, your plan will just continue, right?

How about if I upgrade another line on my family plan and, after receiving the new phone, activate it on my line. Would that work?
