iPhone 5 Jailbreak Poses Challenge for Hackers

Published

on

This Friday a small number of iPhone 5 deliveries will land on the doorsteps of the small group of talented programmers and engineers that dedicate countless hours towards jailbreaking iPhones.

The team behind the Absinthe jailbreak has yet to announce work on an iPhone 5 jailbreak or an iOS 6 jailbreak for the iPhone 4S, but it is undoubtedly in the plans for some of this team.

An iPhone 5 jailbreak will not happen overnight. There are multiple challenges to overcome and plenty of testing to find exploits that make an iPhone 5 jailbreak possible.

The A6 Challenge

Apple A6 jailbreakThe iPhone 5 uses a new Apple A6 processor. When Apple switches to a new processor, it adds complexity to the jailbreak process. The Apple A5 processor in the iPhone 4S required, “thousands of hours of brain-power” and a “ridiculously complex combination of exploits-within-exploits” to make it possible.

Now, with the A6 processor, an iPhone 5 jailbreak is a new challenge with new exploits to be found and taken advantage of. Hopefully the Crash Report tool from greenpois0n will work with the iPhone 5 and iOS 6 to speed up the process.

In order to deliver an iPhone 4S jailbreak, the group of iOS hackers teamed up to form the 2012 iOS Hacking “Dream Team”, made up of posixninjapod2gnikias and planetbeing,

We’ve yet to hear if the dream team is still together, but for the sake of an iPhone 5 jailbreak we hope they are.

iOS 6 Jailbreak

iOS 6 LogoThe iOS 6 jailbreak for older devices like the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS is already available in a developer form, but it is not fully functioning. Most noticeably, there is no easy way to jailbreak iOS 6 and no Cydia yet.

It’s likely that the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 on iOS 6 will see a jailbreak before the iPhone 4S and before the iPhone 5. We’ll be following the developments, but until further notice it’s advisable to stay on iOS 5.1.1 if you need to use jailbreak apps.

iPhone 5 Jailbreak Release Date

I would be pleasantly surprised to see an iPhone 5 jailbreak release date in 2012, but the odds are not in our favor.

The iPhone 4S released in October 2011, but the iPhone 4S jailbreak did not arrive until May 25th 2012, six months later.

Users looking for an iPhone 5 jailbreak will need to be patient for the release date.

What You Can Do?

The team that worked on the iPhone 4S Jailbreak accepts donations, and that’s one way to show appreciation for past work. Donors are not paying for an iPhone 5 jailbreak, so keep that in mind if you donate.

It’s also a good idea to skip the, “When is the iPhone 5 jailbreak?” questions on Twitter and in the forums. The team does a good job of communicating status updates, and is quick to announce release dates once the jailbreak is ready.
