Black iPhone 5 Back Susceptible to Scratching?

Published

on

It looks like the the anodized aluminum back and edges of the black iPhone 5, just released today, may be susceptible to scratching and wear and tear around the edges.

MacRumors reports that an iPhone 5 user at one store took a SIM card tray pin to the back of an iPhone 5 unit to show the effects of scratches on the back of the aluminum part of the iPhone 5’s back. The scratches reveal a silver color underneath the aluminum’s coating.

While not definitely not a typical use case and certainly not condoned by us, it does show that the black iPhone 5’s back could show the signs of damage if users aren’t careful with it. Mixing an unprotected iPhone 5 in a pocket that contains keys would be one real-life situation where something like this could occur.

While this doesn’t depict a typical use case, the black iPhone 5 back could still be susceptible to scratches.

It also appears that the iPhone 5, according to Pocket-lint, shows some wear and tear around the edges after only being used for a short while.

We also wanted to bring this up because we’ve heard from at least one other person who experienced scratching on the edges of his black iPhone 5, shortly after receiving it. It’s unclear just what caused the scratching but this person thinks that it may have been the case that caused the scratches around the phone’s edges.

So while taking an edge from a SIM card tray will obviously cause damage, the fact that a case could potentially cause scratches is concerning to say the least.

The white model iPhone 5 shouldn’t be affected.

At this point, there shouldn’t be any cause for concern due to the method by which this iPhone 5 was scratched but it does appear that the wear and tear is a real issue and that the black iPhone 5’s back could definitely get muffed up if the device isn’t in a case that appropriately handles it.

The iPhone 5 was released in stores today in the United States and it has begun arriving on the doorsteps of those who pre-orders as well.

Has your black iPhone 5’s back received any scratches yet?

The edge of mine has a slight nick. So annoying as I only got it and I’ve been so careful!

Exact same thing happened to mine. I have no idea how it happened either. I think it’s just a matter of time before the entire bezel is silver rather than black!

Mine came badly nicked out of the box!!! I’m quite disappointed. I’m taking mine back and asking for a white one. This is so unacceptable to be so sensitive to damage that I’ve put mine back in the box before I cause any damage to it myself. If you are reading this, let me know how your attempts to return your damaged black phone turn out.
