Another Verizon Phone Beats Droid Incredible 2 & HTC ThunderBolt to Ice Cream Sandwich

Published

on

Today Verizon announced that the LG Lucid, an Android device that possesses a relatively low profile, will be receiving its upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich which means that yet another device has beaten the Motorola Droid Bionic, HTC ThunderBolt and Droid Incredible 2 to Ice Cream Sandwich.

The carrier confirmed the LG Lucid Ice Cream Sandwich roll out tomorrow saying that the update will be pushed in phases to customers. That means that those who own the LG Lucid will want to remain patient. Once the update is available, there will be a prompt indicating such. Owners might also want to try heading into the device’s settings to check for an update.

Update: Motorola Droid Bionic Ice Cream Sandwich Update Approved by Verizon.

Verizon also says that owners can pull the update using the Software Upgrade Assistant Tool if using a PC.

The LG Lucid beat the Droid Bionic and HTC ThunderBolt to ICS.

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich will be a massive upgrade from Android 2.3 Gingerbread and it will bring a new user interface, a customizable lock screen, an improved browser, a better Camera app, and a whole lot more. We imagine that the software will iron out any pre-existing bugs as well.

While this is fantastic news for LG Lucid owners, it’s horrible news for Droid Bionic, HTC ThunderBolt and Droid Incredible 2 owners who are still waiting for Verizon to release their Ice Cream Sandwich updates.

All three of those updates, which were delayed, have been passed up numerous times by ICS updates for little known devices like the LG Lucid.

At this point, only the Droid Bionic Ice Cream Sandwich update has a time table for release. Motorola promised owners that the update would roll out sometime during the fourth quarter of this year which means October, November or December. The HTC ThunderBolt and Droid Incredible 2 aren’t so lucky.

After their updates were delayed, HTC and Verizon remained mum and continue to remain silent on any sort of a roll out date for Ice Cream Sandwich leaving owners in ICS limbo.

Fortunately, we may see progress soon, at least as far as the Droid Bionic and ThunderBolt are concerned. We’ve heard that the Motorola Droid Bionic ICS soak test is scheduled to roll out tomorrow which means that a roll out could occur as soon as next week, provided everything goes according to plan.

We’ve also heard that HTC and Verizon are in the final stages of testing for the ThunderBolt ICS update and that it’s currently slated to roll out by the end of October.

Those dates are of course subject to change.

I’m really pissed at Verizon, and there’s no freakin’ way I’m renewing my contract now…
They pass over their original “flagship LTE phone” for one that almost nobody’s ever heard of?! All while remaining mum on the whole issue…
    Screw ’em…

Tired of complaining about it. I got the HTC Thunderbolt as soon as it was released and I’m on my 3rd one from Verizon. Even if ICS rolls out…..which I don’t have any faith it will anymore…..I am STILL leaving Verizon as soon as my contract is up!

Actually, Verizon announced ICS for Bionic already and have published upgrade materials. Still no date.

Well, I’m happy, as I own a Lucid, and I thought it would never come.

it has been verizon that has pushed back these updates, not google or the phone maker. since verzion couldnt get their bloat ware to work properly on the phones with 4.0 then tehy would not release it. who the hell wants a phone preloaded with junk you cant remove. Verzion needs to understand that we dont want phones loaded full of crap we cant remove just give us a blank slate with no bloat ware and we wil lbe happy

I’m sick of Adam’s articles popping up when I do a Google search for HTC Thunderbolt ICS update. These stories are full of the same bullshit over and over, mostly used to taunt Thunderbolt owners I imagine… Regardless, those of you who say you won’t renew your contract with Verizon are full of shit. Are you seriously going to move away from the best coverage, hands down, out of any other carrier in the US? I didn’t think so. So we all fell for it and bought a lemon of a phone. The first of any new technology is going to almost always be crap compared to the perfected equipment that is released in the months following the release of the OG LTE device. My employer hooked us all up with iPhones and I have not touched my T-Bolt since. Android is fucked. I used to be an Android fanboy, but then I started to use my brain and realized that the way Google allows carriers to molest the handsets and software is what will ultimately be their demise. Apple went to Verizon with the iphone first, but Verison wanted to add bloatware so Apple went elsewhere… until they could get the pure iOS feel that they were looking for. Android doesn’t care; go ahead and rape the OS for the carrier’s needs, for all they care. Rant over, lesson learned. Don’t buy the first of any new technology.

Some of the things I am going to post may get flagged so read it while you can…
Flag 1- I am still on my ORIGINAL Thunderbolt since April 2011 with relative no issues that were not addressed in updates.
Flag 2- I have been with Verizon ever since they cam to NM early 2K’s..never been unsatisified to the extent to drop my contract.
Flag 3- I don’t really care for the bloatware but can see how having the phones “uniformed” maks troubleshooting a lot easier.
Flag 4- I will continue to sleep well at night without the ICS update. Whenever it gets here it gets here.

Thunderbolt wasn’t developed to get to Android 4.0, it was developed for LTE. So it doesn’t surprise me that Verizon can’t get an update in order beore some newer models are being updated. After all, the newer modelse learned from the Thunderbolts release mistakes

What does surprise is how Verizon continues to tell their customers that the update will be available “at the end of the month.”

It wasn’t true in August. It wasn’t true in September. Why should I trust them that it will be true in October?

I got an Incredible 2 last August and I’m stuck with it until April 2013. I’m on my 2nd one (warranty replacement) and the damn kernel version is unrootable. So I’m pretty much at the mercy of Verizon and HTC to deliver ICS. All I know is Gingerbread sucks and I’m tired of seeing devices come out with OS’s that are 3 or 4 versions newer than mine. My next smartphone is going to be a Nexus device. No more bullshit bloatware or GUI shells on top of the Android OS. They are also the first devices to receive OS updates.

Another day 1 purchaser of the Tbolt here.
Thank you HTC/Verizon for teaching me the lesson of the huge problem with the fragmented Android ecosystem – filled with orphans.
About four more weeks until my TBolt/Verizon contract expires.
    I won’t be coming back.

I have a DInc2 in my family, and I’d love to see it updated to ICS. ICS is nice on my Rezound – just want the damn DInc2 to get it. Maybe this century?!? Tweeted @vzwsupport to voice my disappointment. hehe

call htc this morning and briefly spoke with customer support, you honestly would think that these people never even heard of the incredible 2.I asked if the incredible 2 was ever getting the ICS update. I think the guy may have actually googled my question . didn’t seem like they had any signs are ideas of updating. hate to say it but I’m going Samsung

This article proves that it’s not Verizon holding up the ICS update for the TB. It is the OEM. LG got their update out without Verizon holding it hostage for some unknown reason. Also, let us not forget that HTC (not Verizon) is keeping the drivers locked up is the reason the phone doesn’t even have great dev support.

The phone is trash, HTC can suck it. My brother’s D4 has ICS, it’s on Verizon, my buddy’s Bionic, same deal… Squarely on HTC.

I’ve gotta counter your response with who’s holding who hostage… I’ve got a dinc 2 as for 3 others in my family. Verizon gas stated that the main hold up has been performance. My phone is rooted, the other 3 are not… I ported the dinc s ota and have to say performance exceeds gingerbread in every way! So, if HTC is holding back, why did the GSM version of the dinc 2 receive an ota to 3.6? if performance is an issue, why does a ported ota run smoother, faster and more efficient? Verizon is killing the update because their bloatware is killing ics sense. LG got it because It’s aosp, HTC devices won’t see it because Verizon can’t bloat it!

Big Red just sucks, and that’s the problem!

Spoke with an HTC rep today 11/13/12 re my Verizon DInc2 and ICS. The issue is not the RAM or processor. The partition seems to be the claimed issue. Was strongly suggested there will be NO ics for the DInc2 unless you wish to root. He also clarified GSM vs CDMA is not an issue. So,.because a repartition wiping user settings and saved data means no OTA or official Verizon update.

Can anyone recommend a good set of instructions for rooting the dinc2 and installing ics? Yeah, I can google it, but if someone has a favorite page, I’d appreciate the head start.
