Windows Phone 8 Users Reporting Random Reboot Issues

Published

on

Owners of new Windows Phone 8 powered devices, specifically the Nokia Lumia 920 and the Windows Phone 8X, are apparently seeing random reboot issues where the devices are resetting themselves for no apparent reason.

According to ZDNet and a host of forum complaints, owners of the Windows Phone 8X have been experiencing random reboots where the device resets itself without any explanation or user interaction. It also appears that some Lumia 920 owners are seeing similar issues where the device becomes unresponsive and freezes. Users are also reporting random reboots on the Lumia 920 as well.

It also seems some owners are experiencing email sync issues where the accounts are stuck in an endless loop of trying to sync.

Right now, it’s unclear exactly what’s going on with the devices though one possible explanation is that the Skype for Windows Phone 8 preview application may be the root of the rebooting issue. Uninstalling the app completely may work for some users but apparently not all users as some are experiencing the issue even without the application installed.

Fortunately, Microsoft apparently is aware of the issue and is said to be actively investigating the reports from Windows Phone 8 owners. Whether that will translate into a solution remains to be seen but at this point, affected Windows Phone 8 owners likely wouldn’t turn down help.

From the looks of things, there isn’t a clear explanation for the issue and that means it could be awhile before we find out what’s causing these devices to randomly reboot and freeze and when a remedy might become available.

The Nokia Lumia 920 is experiencing issues as well.

Many will remember the HTC ThunderBolt which experienced similar random reboot issues but didn’t see the issue fixed for months down the line.

Hopefully, the culprit is something smaller than the Windows Phone 8 software itself though Microsoft concocting a fix for the software certainly remains in the realm of possibility at this point.

We didn’t experience any random reboots on our HTC Windows Phone 8X, but are any Windows Phone 8 owners out there experiencing this?

I’ve had my new 920 brick twice. The first time I rebooted with sound, power, and camera buttons. The second time it stayed bricked until I removed the sim card and reseated it. If it is Skype that would be a shame particularly if Microsoft doesn’t let us know.
