Twitter Brings Filters To iPhone & Android Apps, After Instagram Feud

Published

on

Twitter’s new iPhone and Android apps now feature photo filters for sharing edited photos without using Instagram.

The new photo filters come from a partnership with Aviary, which provides a photo editing SDK for any developer that wants it. The new apps include eight different photo filters, which is less than Instagram offers. The filters range from black & white to cool, warm, vintage, gritty cinematic, happy, and vignette. Twitter’s app also includes an auto-enhance feature that users can apply before the filters.

To compete with Instagram Twitter’s new apps let users keep crop the size of their photos. Users can set their own size of the photo, or make their photo into a square like Instagram does.

The new Twitter photo filters come shortly after Instagram decided to remove support for Twitter cards. Now whenever a user tweets out an Instagram photo it only shows a link, which brings followers to the Instagram page for that individual photo. On the web and in the Twitter apps Instagram photos no long appear in the stream.

In other apps like Tweetbot, however, Instagram photos still look the same. That’s only if the app uses a special method for displaying photos, however.Twitter filters

The bickering between Twitter and Instagram doesn’t affect Twitter users who use third-party clients as much. Those users still see Instagram photos as usual, and don’t have access to the new photo filters unless they download the Twitter app.

Users who want the photo filters, but prefer third-party apps can use Aviary’s Photo Editor to get similar filters. Photo Editor by Aviary includes the filters in addition to other effects, filters, and stickers. The app also lets users change settings of photos including brightness, contrast, saturation, sharpness, and redeye. Photo Editor by Aviary is free and available for iOS and Android.
