Apple Begins Testing iPhone 6 With iOS 7 According to Developers

Published

It looks like developers of some popular third-party iOS apps are now seeing new Apple hardware tested with their apps, notably a device with the iPhone 6.1 identifier running iOS 7. The same logs also point out that the apps are being tested with an IP address originating from Apple’s Cupertino, California headquarters, which further suggests that Apple’s app team and software engineers may have already begun testing current apps for compatibility with the upcoming iPhone 6 hardware and iOS 7 software package.

It’s unclear what specs the iPhone 6 would include, but new rumors suggest a thinner screen with an even higher resolution. At this time, the current iPhone 5 flagship has the identifier of iPhone 5.1 and iPhone 5.2 depending on which LTE model is selected.

If Apple does skip to an iPhone 6, likely there will be big changes as historically, Apple added an ‘S’ to the iPhone numbering schemes between major generations, such as the iPhone 3GS following the iPhone 3G but preceding the iPhone 4, and the iPhone 4S appearing in between the iPhone 4’s and the iPhone 5’s releases.

The Next Web, which originally reported the story, is saying that iOS 7 and the iPhone 6 could be released at the middle of the year. More recently, however, Apple has moved the hardware release until late summer or early fall, as is the case of the iPhone 5, and has pushed its hardware announcement in early summer to accommodate developers at the WWDC conference.

This isn’t the first time that Apple has shown–via developer logs–that it is testing new, unannounced software and hardware ahead of a public announcement. A year ago, iOS 6 references were seen a month ahead of the WWDC unveiling.

The new year is definitely bringing in some interesting news from Apple just as new rumors about the rival Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphone is beginning to pick up steam.
