Tech Super Bowl Ads: Best and the Worst

Published

on

While not everyone is happy about the outcome of the Super Bowl, a large portion of viewers watch it just for the ads and the halftime show.

While there isn’t much to say about the technology running Beyoncé’s halftime show, there were a number of technology ads surrounding the game.

Some ads, like Best Buy’s were great. Others were just average or disappointing, and of course there were some that were a bit offensive. Here’s a collection of some of the best and worst tech ads from Super Bowl XLVII.

Best Buy’s ad featuring Amy Poehler from Parks and Recreation is arguably the best tech ad from the Super Bowl this year. It features Poehler asking Best Buy employees a number of questions that are easy to imagine users asking in the store. It also gives her an excuse to just mess around in a Best Buy store and say “dongle” a few too many times in the span of 30 seconds.

Star Trek had a good ad for what looks like a great movie, but it also marks the public debut of the AppStore.com short URL. Apple introduced the new URL scheme to developers at the beginning of the month, and the Star Trek ad used it to promote the movie’s companion app in the iOS App Store.

Given the teaser for the spot, Samsung’s ad was a bit disappointing. It features Seth Rogen and Paul Rudd just pitching an ad that they don’t seem to have much interest in making themselves. The highlight of the ad is Bob Odenkirk, who is best known as Saul Goodman, the Samsung ad guy. There’s also a brief appearance from LeBron James, who recently appeared in another Samsung ad.

BlackBerry’s Super Bowl ad focused on what BlackBerry 10 can’t do, instead of what it can do. Instead of showing off BlackBerry Hub or the cool rewind features of the camera or the keyboard, the company showed a Z10 user turning a tanker truck into rubber ducks. Probably not the best way to show off a brand new mobile OS.

Cars.com used its Super Bowl ad to show how easy buying a car is with its mobile app. The ad is somewhat clever, but not as good as some other ads.

As always, GoDaddy had some of the worst ads of the Super Bowl this year. Its first one was offensive on many levels for women, geeks and just humans in general. The second ad focuses on using the service for buying .co domains. It’s just a bit silly, but at least it’s not terribly offensive.

GoPro’s Super Bowl ad asks users to mount the camera on a baby’s head for some interesting videos. The dubstep music added to the baby videos is somewhat funny.
