The evasi0n iOS 6.1 jailbreak is an overwhelming success, freeing over 7 million devices and allowing owners to install Cydia apps and Winterboard themes to customize the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch to their hearts’ content.
The evad3rs team has yet to comment on the number of devices that the evasi0n iOS 6.1 jailbreak was used on in the past four days, but based on the number of devices connecting to the Cydia app store, it’s in the millions.
Jay Freeman, the man in charge of the Cydia app store shared that over 7 million iOS devices visited the store, since the first iPhone 5 jailbreak tool went live. This includes, 5.15 million iPhones, 1.35 million iPads and 400,000 iPod touches. Freeman doesn’t detail how many of these devices are the iPhone 5, iPad mini or iPad; all of which could be jailbroken for the first time.
Cydia is a third-party app store, similar to the Amazon App Store for Android devices, but it is only accessible to devices which have been freed with a jailbreak app. Cydia includes apps users cannot find on the Apple App Store including Cydia tweaks that change how the iPhone works. There are also Winterboard themes that allow users to customize the look of the iPhone or iPad.
7 million devices freed by the evasi0n iOS 6.1 jailbreak is impressive, but this is a small percentage of users. According to Steve Troughton-Smith this represents 2% of iOS 6 users.
Seven million people with the iOS 6 jailbreak, or just over 2% of the iOS 6 userbase. Apple – GateKeeper please; give us a dev unlock switch

Given the popularity of apps and backgrounds that appear to change the look of the iPhone in the official App Store it is likely that more users would download Cydia apps and tweaks and Winterboard themes if it was as easy as flipping a switch, as Troughton-Smith suggests. This is why pod2g began a call for an open iOS 7 before evasi0n was released.
