Only 16 GB iPhone 5 Will Be Available in Stores at T-Mobile

After having confirmed that the iPhone 5 will be hitting its networks next month at its UNcarrier media event, T-Mobile USA has confirmed that it will only be stocking the 16 GB model of the iPhone 5 at its stores. The more expensive 32 GB and 64 GB variants of Apple’s current flagship smartphone will only be sold through T-Mobile’s web portal online as well as directly through Apple, according to a report on TmoNews.

T-Mobile-4G-LTE-650x411[1]With the UNcarrier announcement, T-Mobile announced that it would stop subsidizing smartphones. Instead, consumers can put down a deposit and make interest-free payments to own the phone. The other option would be to pay for the full retail price of the phone.

And according to calculations, going through at least one month of interest-free financing for the iPhone 5 through T-Mobile and then paying off the balance after one month would be cheaper than paying the full retail price through Apple. Here are the calculations that were made by TmoNews:

iPhone 5 16GB = $99 down payment, 24 monthly payments of $20 totaling $579. Apple’s price for an unlocked 16GB iPhone 5? $649.

iPhone 5 32GB = $199 down payment and 24 payments of $20 for a total of $679. Apple’s price? $749.

iPhone 5 64GB = $299 down payment and 24 payments of $20 for a total of $779. Apple’s price? $849.

The iPhone 5 on T-Mobile will compete against the likes of Android flagships such as the HTC One and the Galaxy S4 from Samsung. All devices will support T-Mobile’s 4G HSPA+ network as well as the new, fast 4G LTE network where available.

The blog mentioned that “it’s unfortunate that the 32GB and 64GB won’t be available in retail stores right from the start,” suggesting that perhaps in the future, T-Mobile will stock the larger capacities in its stores.

I compared my iPhone 5 right next to my iPhone 4, 4s, Samsung Galaxy S3, and a HTC Evo. The difference in quality, brightness, and crispness is apparent immediately next to the old iPhones and HTC, but it doesn’t seem better then the S3. For watching movies, I would choose my S3 10 out of 10 times versus this iPhone. Despite that, the 4″ display and the crisp and bright display make this a very close second to the S3. With the bigger screen, people may expect typing to be easier, but its really not. I still get the cramped feeling. The taller display allows more information to be seen on web pages and while reading, but many Applications haven’t been updated yet making it feel useless. Even after getting scores of updates to better fit the iPhone, over half of my Applications still are playing catch up. This problem is said to be fixed by the end of the year as more and more developers realize they need to fix it.
