Google announced the Google Play Store 4.0 this morning. The new version of the Google Play Store will roll out to users within the next several weeks, bringing an enhanced user experience to Android phone without any need to wait for carrier or manufacturer updates.

With Google Play Store 4.0, users will see larger images and similar content types grouped together. The Google Play Store 4.0 update is clearly focused on entertainment in Google Play, and Google claims the redesign, “helps you find great entertainment, fast.”

In addition to the overhaul to the front page, the new Google Play Store should simplify the checkout process to make it easier to go from looking to watching a movie.

The current version of the Google Play Store is 3.10.14, so the jump up to Google Play Store 4.0 is a major jump that is bringing a host of changes.

Users can expect to see larger icons throughout the entire Google Play Store 4.0 experience. There is a small redesign to the individual app pages. Early versions of the Google Play Store 4.0 app show a transition towards auto updating. Instead of a box that asks users if they want to auto update an app, the check box now lets users turn off auto-updating.

Users who often update apps will enjoy Google Play Store 4.0 which no longer pushes users to a useless confirmation page after choosing to install or update. This is definitely an improvement to the checkout process.

Android smartphones and tablets running Android 2.2 (Froyo) or higher will receive the new Google Play Store update as an update through the Google Play Store, and users don’t need to do anything to get the latest version.

Google shows the Google Play Store running on the Nexus 4, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10, but the update will arrive on most modern Android devices. Less than 2% of Android devices in use reportedly run an older version of Android.

There is no Google Play Store 4.0 apk that lets users skip the wait and install the new Google Play Store update without a wait, but we are currently searching for the manual upgrade files and will keep readers updated when we find them.

I have a nexus 7 and the update still hasn’t rolled out. Worse still, something that Google had done has f***ed up the music store part of the Play store app. Its pathetic, you have to ask yourself whether Apple would do such a half-assed job with itunes
