Samsung Galaxy Event on June 20: Galaxy S4 Mini & More Likely
Samsung is planning a Galaxy event on June 20th which is where we will likely see three new Samsung Galaxy S4 devices — the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini, Galaxy S4 Active and the Galaxy S4 Zoom.
This is not a Samsung Mobile Unboxed event like we expect to see for the Galaxy Note 3 later this year or like the one that welcomed in the Samsung Galaxy S4 in March, so we expect a smaller event with a collection of new devices that build out on existing Samsung devices.
The Samsung Galaxy line of smartphones is large, but we expect the focus will point right at the Galaxy S4. Samsung announced Galaxy S4 sales topping 10 million earlier this month and we expect to see a trio of new Galaxy S4 branded devices at the event.
While Samsung is only teasing new Galaxy devices, we expect that this includes three heavily rumored Galaxy S4 variants as the timing matches up well with rumors of new Galaxy S4 models. Users that just purchased the Galaxy S4 shouldn’t be too concerned as rumors point to devices that will use the S4 name, but won’t necessarily compete with the Galaxy S4 as a flagship device.
Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini
The Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini is the most anticipated device which could show up at the Samsung Galaxy event on June 20th. The smaller version of the Galaxy S4 is reportedly coming to consumers who are looking for a cheaper Galaxy S4 experience and a pre-paid Galaxy S4 device.
According to The Wall Street Journal the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini is set for a debut at the event alongside other Galaxy devices.
The photo below reportedly shows what the Galaxy S4 mini looks like next to the Galaxy S4.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini specs point to a mid-range device, which is what we expect from the smaller Galaxy S4. Expect a device with a 4.3-inch qHD display, a dual or quad-core processor, 8MP camera and Samsung TouchWiz 2.0 running on Android 4.2. Don’t expect all of the Galaxy S4 features, but we could see some arrive on the device.
Rumors point to an AT&T Galaxy S4 Mini arriving in the U.S., which would make senese but there are no confirmed plans at this time. Knowing Samsung we may see the June 20th event come and go without any official word on carriers.
Samsung Galaxy S4 Active
The Samsung Galaxy S4 Active will also likely make an appearance at the event. This rugged Galaxy S4 model includes dust and water-resistant features that make it appealing to users who want to use it outdoors, though it is not likely to meet the needs of users who want a fully rugged smartphone.
Recently a video leaked showing the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active, and giving a glimpse of some of the specs we can expect to see on board the device.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 Active will likely ship with an older Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus processor, a step down from the Snapdragon 600 processor that powers the flagship Galaxy S4. The 5-inch 1080P HD Super AMOLED display appears to remain on board, which is a big plus. The video also shows the TouchWiz 2 interface so we expect Android 4.2 on board as well.
We expect an AT&T Galaxy S4 Active device based on rumors, but neither company has confirmed the device yet.
Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom
The Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom is also possible at this event as a replacement for the Samsung Galaxy Camera which debuted late last year.
The Galaxy S4 Zoom may feature a 16MP sensor and an optical zoom that allows users to zoom in on a subject, something we don’t typically see in a smartphone. Rumored Galaxy S4 specs include,
- 16MP Sensor
- 4.3-inch qHD Super AMOLED display
- 8GB storage
- Micro SD card support up to 64GB
- Bluetooth 4.0 LE
- WiFi 802.11 n
- A GPS
- Android 4.2 Jelly Bean
- Samsung TouchWiz Overlay
- Dual-core or Quad core processor with an unknown amount of RAM
There are no rumored Galaxy S4 Zoom carriers in the U.S., but AT&T and Verizon carried the original Galaxy Camera.
There are no confirmed Samsung Galaxy S4 Active, Zoom and Mini release dates or prices, but rumors point to a summer release, alongside new Galaxy S4 color options. Pricing will likely come in the weeks after the launch event.
