Sony Readying Xperia Competitor to Galaxy Note 3 for June 25?

Sony has announced a press conference in Germany that’s slated for the 25th of June, asking if we’re ready to “Want More?” Other than the venue location and date, the invitation does not reveal any additional details, but given the “more” reference and recent rumors that Sony is working on an Xperia device with an even larger screen, the press conference could very well lead to the introduction of a Galaxy Note 3 competitor for the Japanese electronics firm.

The press event invitation was posted on Phone Arenawhich is now also reporting that the phablet-class device may also debut with some sort of stylus to compete more directly with the Samsung device.

After having released a successful Xperia Z and ZL smartphone with a 5-inch display, Sony had been more recently rumored to be exploring even larger screen options for a rumored unannounced Xperia device. Code named Togari, the device was described to have a 6.44-inch display and potentially debut with a 20-megapixel camera.

A second phablet-class device with the Honami code name also appeared in the recent past, and that device is said to be closer in size to the Xperia Z, bearing its predecessor’s waterproofing coating. The Honami is also said to be using a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, which would help Sony stay with the competition as its Xperia Z, announced at the beginning of this year, is running the aging Snapdragon S4 Pro processor while newer HTC One and Galaxy S4 rivals are being powered by a more recent Snapdragon 600 CPU.

Given that Sony’s flagship is already taking the “Z” spot in the alphabet, it’s unclear if the next device will start from the top with an “Xperia A” branding. Rival BlackBerry, which had debuted its Z10 smartphone, is rumored to be coming out with a successor called the A10 later this year.

It’s still unclear what Sony will have in store for its German unveiling. Rival Samsung had already scheduled a press conference for an event that will have the company unveiling new Windows and Android products in London just a few days earlier.

Given that WWDC will be kicking off next week and Microsoft’s BUILD conference will be happening towards the end of the month, June will be another big month for mobile tech announcements.
