For $13 it’s easy to add wireless charging to the Samsung Galaxy S3 without the need to buy a new back or give up the ability to use cases.
After doing some digging I found a $13 Samsung Galaxy S3 wireless charging receiver that snaps into place on the Samsung Galaxy S3 underneath the existing back, making it compatible with Qi chargers.
For the past several weeks I’ve used this cheap Galaxy S3 wireless charger add-on with the Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3 and the Nexus 4 wireless charger with great success.
This is not an official Samsung Galaxy S3 wireless charging kit, which Samsung never ended up releasing, but it snaps into place easily without adding any bulk and it is easy to use with most Qi wireless chargers. I like using it with the Nexus 4 wireless charger because it keeps the phone at an angle where I can see notifications while it is charging.
Installing the Samsung Galaxy S3 wireless charger is as simple as popping the back off of the Galaxy S3, lining the receiver up and then closing the hatch. There is a small sticker that attaches the Qi wireless charger to the battery, but the pressure from the back is enough to keep the charger in place if you use multiple batteries. Because the charger attaches to the battery, not the actual device, those who use the sticker should still be able to swap batteries easily, but only one will work with wireless charging.
When the charger is in place, snap the back on. It is snug, but it is not too tight that it pops off during normal usage. This setup allows users to still use a Galaxy S3 case while wirelessly charging.
Unlike some wireless charging setups, the Galaxy S3 wireless charger is not picky about where it is placed on the Nexus 4 wireless charger. This charger adds $60 to the cost of this setup, but there are cheaper alternative Qi chargers available. The Samsung Galaxy S3 wireless charger charges the device pretty fast, though users may see quicker charger when connecting to a cord. The nice part about this setup is that it leaves the Micro USB port open for use when a wireless charger is not available.
After using this $13 Samsung Galaxy S3 wireless charger I would definitely buy it again, even with the added cost of buying a Qi wireless charging base.
