AT&T Locks Moto X Customizations to Two-Year Contract
It looks like potential customers who want to buy the Moto X and customize their smartphones using the Moto Maker design studio will have to sign a two-year contract with wireless carrier AT&T Mobility. This means that customers cannot pay full retail price for the phone without signing a contract.
The customization feature, which allows customers to customize their smartphones with designs, materials, and selections of colors, will be a time-limited AT&T Mobility feature before it will become available to other carriers later this year. Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon are all signed on to sell the Moto X, Motorola’s newest U.S.-centric flagship smartphone.
According to news from Droid Life, customers cannot purchase a “Design It” card for the full retail price of the phone and not ink a two-year contract with AT&T. At this time, systems at AT&T retail stores require an upgrade to be av available before customers can even buy the Design It card, which is then used with the Moto Maker design studio to customize the Moto X.
It’s unclear if this restriction is due to problems that Motorola may be facing. It’s been reported that the 4-day waiting period for customization has been pushed back due to overwhelming demand. Additionally, it had also been reported earlier that Motorola may have faced some problems with personalizing the phone with an inscription and the company is temporarily not offering laser etching or engraving on the Moto X until a later date.
So far, neither AT&T Mobility nor Google-owned Motorola Mobility have addressed the restriction of a mandatory two-year contract extension for customizing the Moto X. We’ll have to see if this AT&T policy changes once Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile are able to offer customization options to their customers.
Moto X without customization appears to not be limited by the same restriction.
