The Belkin WeMo Smart LED Bulbs allow iPhone and Android users to control light bulbs in their existing lamps, lights and ceiling fixtures with an app and WiFi connection.
While the idea of a smart LED light bulb that is connected to WiFi or wireless and controlled from an iPhone is not new, Belkin pushes for a more aggressive starting price undercutting the Philips Hue Connected Bulb starter pack by $70.
Belkin WeMo is a connected home line of accessories and gadgets that allow users to control parts of their home through an iPhone or Android app and with sensors that can turn on lights based on motion. The devices connect to a WeMo Link to ultimately connect to smartphones.
The new WeMo LED Lighting Starter Set is $129 and includes two LED bulbs with individual bulbs arriving for $39.99. The Philips Hue starter set includes three bulbs for the higher price, bringing the overall value in line, but Belkin’s lower price could ultimately attract more users that want to experiment with WeMo and connected home accessories.
The Belkin WeMo Smart LED Bulbs offer the following functionality, and are a 60 watt equivalent with 800 Lumens and 3000 Kelvin temperature range. The light bulbs offer a claimed 23 year life and the system can connect up to 50 bulbs at one time.
- Turn lights on/off or schedule from anywhere
- Fully dimmable
- 60W equivalent bulbs last up to 23 years
- Vacation mode automatically turns lights on/off to simulate occupancy
- Dim to sleep – gradually dim lights to fall asleep more naturally
- Warm white light similar to incandescent bulbs
In addition to the Smart LED Bulbs, there is also a new WeMo maker that will allow users to take control of WeMo and make additional actions an control other items using the app and know how as well as the IFTTT web service.
Belkin’s WeMo lineup of devices grew from 2013 adding the new lightbulb, the WeMo Maker and a WeMo Crock Pot, bringing a WiFi slow cooker to the masses for $99.
